Miss Mary Witmer, 90, of Wakarusa, died shortly after midnight

Miss Mary Witmer, 90, of Wakarusa, died shortly after midnight Thursday from
complications following influenza, with which she became ill March j17. She died at the
home of her brother-in-law and sister, Mr. and Mrs. George Weldy, north of Wakarusa,
where she had lived for three years.
Born Nov. 21, 1857, in Mahoning County, Ohio, the daughter of the late Samuel and
Mary (Bixler) Witmer, she came to Elkhart County with her parents in 1865, and resided
near Wakarusa all her life.
Survivors include a brother, the Rev. Isaac B. Witmer of Columbiana, Ohio; and two
sisters, Mrs. Eli (Susan) Wenger of near Wakarusa, who is staying with friends in
Elkhart, and Mrs. George (Lucretia) Weldy, at whose home Miss Witmer died.
Funeral services were held Saturday at 1:30pm at the Weldy home and at the Holdeman
Mennonite Church at 2 o’clock. The Rev. Clarence Shank assisted by the Rev. Warren
Shaum, officiated.
She was a member of the Holdeman church all of her life. Nephews were pallbearers.
Burial in the Olive cemetery north of town.
