The Pointer Tails South Point’s School Newspaper Issue 86 Pointers Ready For Big Game The South Point football team is ready to tackle the anticipated game on Friday night against the Fairland Dragons. The Pointers (2-2) lost to the Dragons (3-1) last year on the last play of the game, and now they want revenge. Tom Beard, head coach for the Pointers, commented Friday’s game, “We’re very excited about Friday’s game. Fairland has a good team this year, and we have the potential to beat them as well. This would be a great win for us, especially since it’s on our home field and it is homecoming.” The football players have been practicing every day after school, getting ready for the game. “We will be ready by Friday. The guys are excited for this game, and I am excited for them. They have been working hard, and they deserve this win,” Beard said. The homecoming game will be this Friday, October 4th at 7:30, at Pointer Stadium. Admission for the public will be five dollars. September 29, 2003 Homecoming Week Will Be Full of Festivities This week is homecoming week at South Point High School. The week will be filled with different daily events that have been a tradition for many years at South Point. The week is called Spirit Week, and each day students are encouraged to dress up for the theme of the day. The themes for the days are as follows: Monday- Get up and go day; Tuesday- Mismatch day; Wednesday- Hillbilly day; Thursday- Grandparent day; Friday- Blue and Gold day. For seniors, Friday will be Seventies day instead of Blue and Gold day. Student Body President Jamie Carson commented on Spirit Week and theme days, “The Student Council tried to think of days that we thought students would have the most fun with dressing up. It’s a great thing to participate in and it only happens one week during the school year. This is a time when you can dress up and look silly, and no one will care because they look the same way. It gives people a chance to take a break from the ordinary every day routine.” Other festivities will include a halldecorating contest between the classes, spirit links, Homecoming Olympics, and Powder Puff football. The hall decorating will be between the four classes, and each class will have a designated hall to decorate. At the end of the week, the halls will be judged on creativity and most school spirit. The spirit links are individual paper links that can be purchased by the students at ten cents per link. Each class will compete for purchasing the most links. Homecoming week will conclude with a dance on Saturday in the gymnasium. The money raised from the spirit links will go towards decorating the gym for Saturday’s dance. Homecoming Olympics This year, the Homecoming Olympics are going to be very popular. The Olympics started about five years ago, and it purpose of them was not only for the entertainment, but also to promote school clubs and to get people involved with them. Previous events have included a potato sack race, a hula hoop contest, and the ever popular pie eating contest. Each school club can sign up for any number of the events, as long as they have enough people on the roster for each event. Steve Baise, teacher and announcer for the Olympics, commented on the success of the Olympics. “The Homecoming Olympics has become the most anticipated event during homecoming week. It is entertaining to watch students participate in many of the events, and it is a good way to promote the clubs that are in the school.” For the past two years, the Spanish Club has won first place, and only time will tell if they will remain the champions for the third year in a row. The Homecoming Olympics will take place on Wednesday afternoon in the gymnasium. Homecoming Queen to be Announced Friday The Student Body will choose the next Homecoming Queen this week. The winner will be announced during half time at the football game. Each class will hold elections for attendants from each class. There will be one freshman attendant, one sophomore attendant, one junior attendant, and three Senior Attendants that will be chosen by each class. Once the three senior attendants are chosen by the senior class, the entire student body will vote on the one they want to be crowned Homecoming Queen. Each attendant will be escorted by a male attendant, which is someone the attendant picks herself. One of the newest traditions at South Point is having a Homecoming King, who runs during the same time as the queen, but is not announced until Saturday at the homecoming dance. “Being on the Homecoming court is a really big deal for most girls. In the past there have been some really close elections, and it’s always been exciting,” student body president Jamie Carson said. Posters will be decorating the walls, and candy will be given out as candidates try to win over the votes of the students. The Homecoming Queen will appear in various parades, such as Christmas parades, throughout the school year. This is a picture of the crown that the Homecoming Queen will wear. The Queen will be crowned at Friday’s game.
