XYZ COUNCIL RECEIVES $…. GRANT TO CUT POLLUTION
Local efforts to tackle stormwater pollution – the single biggest threat to the health of
XYZ’s waterways - received a boost today when XYZ Council received a grant for
$…..from the NSW Environment Protection Authority.
XYZ Council won the award for its proposal to ………………..
M…………….., XYZ’s Mayor, said, “This grant is good news for XYZ’s water
quality and good news for local residents.
“When it rains, water washes cigarette butts, dog litter, plastic bags, fertilisers, leaves
and other types of pollution down the drain. It all ends up in our rivers, lakes and
harbours.
“ This award will help council educate the local community that the Drain is Just for
Rain and show that we all have a role to play in stopping pollution going down the
drain in the first place.
“Over the next few months XYZ Council will be working with the local community to
drive home that message. Our education campaign will show, for example, that when
you wash your car in the street, it has the same impact as washing it in the middle of a
local creek.
“Council will also provide lots of good suggestions about how to do the right thing –
such as composting or mulching clippings and leaves rather than putting them down
the gutter,” said Mayor X.
The grant to council forms part of a three-year $60 million commitment by the State
Government to tackle stormwater pollution head-on. Most of that money goes to local
councils to fund local solutions to stormwater pollution.
Right across the state, councils are using the money to build pollution trapping
devices and educate local communities about stormwater pollution.
