STENCIL YOUR DRAIN TO KEEP YOUR WATERWAYS CLEAN
An education campaign was launched today by XYZ Council to show people that
whatever they put down the stormwater drain ends up polluting our rivers, lakes and
harbours.
The education campaign is part of the Drain is Just for Rain campaign. It involves
stencilling the grates of XYZ’s stormwater drains with a ….. logo. The logo is a
reminder to people that the Drain is Just for Rain.
Mayor of XYZ Council, Cr……… said, “ We chose the logo of …………… to
remind people that whatever they put down the drain affects the quality of the
environment in which they swim, fish and sail.
“Council will approach community groups such as schools and progress associations
to see if they would like to become involved in the drain stencilling campaign.
“Other organisations can also get involved. As the drains in an area get stencilled
leaflets and posters will be issued, and local shopkeepers may want to display these.
“We all have a role to play in ensuring our waterways are clean; one way that we can
help is by stencilling our grates so that when people visit XYZ they know that we are
doing our bit to reduce stormwater pollution and that they should respect our efforts.
“Whenever people put something inappropriate down the drain - whether it is a
cigarette butt, a plastic bag, or some leaves - it has an impact on our waterways.
Stencilling drains is one way of making sure that the pollution does not get in the
drain in the first place.” said Cr …...
The Drain is Just for Rain campaign is part of a three-year $60 million commitment
by the State Government to tackle stormwater pollution head on. Most of that money
goes to local councils to fund local solutions to stormwater pollution.
