The eagles’ NesT May/June Edition Teacher Appreciation Week By: Ben May 6, 2013 marked the beginning of Teacher Appreciation Week. During this week the students of St. Mark take this time to show their love and adoration for the hard work our teachers do for us. This week my fellow student body brought in different things for their diligent teachers. On Monday students brought different flowers for their teachers. The flowers varied in size and colors and left the teachers happy. On Tuesday, the students gave their teachers cards, thanking them for their efforts. These cards are an excellent way to show the students appreciation for their teacher. Wednesday was a sweet day for the teachers. The students brought in all sorts of delicious fruit for their special teachers. These students sure know how to make their teachers feel loved. The various apples, pears, and even kiwis were a delicious treat for the teachers to eat. The students threw the teachers and staff a full continental breakfast on Thursday morning. Bagels, muffins, doughnuts, cookies and more flooded the office. The teachers were spoiled with the amount of delectable treats given to them for their breakfast. On the last day of Teacher Appreciation Week, the teachers were given an awesome Jimmy Johns lunch consisting of delicious subs for them to enjoy. All of these things the teachers were given just makes me want to become a teacher even more! Thank you so much for the time and efforts given to us for the furthering of our education. Benjamin I thank you so, so much for helping me with everything this year. We would be hopeless without your help. Griffin Thank you so much for taking the time to teach us this year. I’m sure we all enjoyed your teaching skills. Brooklynne Thank you so much for taking your own time and teaching us this year. I have had a great first year in the 7/8th grade classroom. Madeline Thank you so much for all of your hard work it was such a blessing. I have learned a ton over the school year. Maggie Thank you so much for all the time and effort you gave throughout the school year. I have learned a lot. Britton Field Day By: Brooklynne & Griffin Field day was on May 24th. Field day has been a traditional event for our school. West Shore, St. Mark, Our Savior and ISJ are the four schools that go every year. There are four schools that go to this event. Field day is an all day event at Our Savior Lutheran School. We left school around 9:30 a.m. The kids packed a lunch and brought money for the concessions. The parents also had an amazing time. Annual 7th and 8th Grade Softball Tournament By: Maddie This year’s annual Our Savior softball tournament at Lemery Park was great! This year, four schools including St. Mark came and played. The other schools that joined us were: West Shore, Our Savior, and Holy Trinity. Every school played a total of 3 games. We went home with 2 wins and only 1 loss. While playing in the softball tourney, several people hit over the fence homeruns, and inside the park homeruns. Everybody had a great time playing, talking with friends, and eating lunch together. 7th and 8th Grade Activities By: Maddie During the month of May, seventh and eighth graders were quite eventful. We had the softball tournament, the end of electives, and all of our quarterly projects. The softball tournament was a blast, everyone had a great time. With the end of electives, everyone was disappointed. Many people, for their last Tuesday of electives, went somewhere for fun. Everyone had a great time with electives this year. This month’s quarterly projects are quite fun. For math, you get to design your own dream tree house. For writing, you had to write a business letter to Mr. Bahr, about a change or a removal of a rule at school .Finally we had to write a 5 paragraph report on your monthly AR book. Now, as we are finishing up this school year, it is just now sinking in that 8th grade is going to be leaving and graduating soon. Graduation is on June 9, at St. Mark Lutheran Church, at the 10 a.m. service. Please come join us for a time of fellowship and celebration, as we see the following 8th graders graduate: Olivia, Salem, Austin, Ben, Donovan, Josh, and Kevin. All of the 8th graders will be greatly missed. The First and Second Grades’ Adventures By: Payton & Brooklynne In social studies the first and second graders are finishing the trading unit. They were discussing that you have to pay to get goods. They are learning how to save earned money to buy what they need and what they want, like any kind of special item or a good education. In science they were finishing the weather unit. They were graphing out the weather in May. They also learned how a weatherman can predict the weather by using special equipment. In reading the first and second graders are reviewing their reading skills and applying them. They are becoming very good readers. In spelling the first and second graders’ words are getting harder each time they take a test. They were working on inflected endings. They are expanding their vocabulary in spelling. In math, the first graders were reviewing addition and subtraction. They counted everyday. The second graders were learning multiplication. As school is coming to a close, the first and second graders are counting off the days until summer. Everyone is very excited. BABY CHICKS!!! By: Payton On May 9, the fifth and sixth grade classroom was filled with the sounds of baby chicks chirping. Just that morning, the first chick, Butter Baby, emerged from her egg. Along with Butter Baby, Yougo, Pipsqueak, Xerxes, Ruske, Chocolate, Chip, Brutus, Black Top, and Area joined her and took a breath of air for the first time. The fifth and sixth graders crowded around the chicks’ home anxiously, hoping their egg would produce a chick. Most did; others were not as lucky. As the excitement started to wear off, the chicks were loved and touched after the kids washed their hands before and after. Everyone cradled each chick as they watched them grow. The fifth and sixth graders watched God’s gift of life in motion through the little chicks. They would have loved to have the experience again and again and again. They saw and heard (and smelled?!) the little lives of the young chicks. Youth Ministries By: Payton The youth ministries have ended. The good news is that they will be back in the fall! Each class is finishing up its Bible stories. Girls 4 God’s “little sisters” were invited for a day of fun after church on April 21. They painted canvases and a taco salad lunch was included. Everyone painted gorgeous artwork and had a great time! The kids who were going through the confirmation process have been working hard this past year. They have been preparing their hearts and minds towards God for their confirmation. Katelyn, Josh, Maddie, Brooke, and Ben are being confirmed. Their service was on May 5 at 11:00 am. Congratulations! Holy Sweat Service Learning Camp is back for the summer! Hero. The Light. The Hope. Will begin on July 14 to July 20. The week is full of activities that serve God and others. Join in for lots of fun! 5th-8th Grade A.R. By: Britton The 5th through 8th graders get to enjoy a trip to Sky Zone for an A.R. reward trip. If you got 80 A.R. points you could go. We are excited to go and hope our reading will extend throughout the summer. In 5th and 6th grade, we have to read 400 minutes in one month. Reading for that long helps us earn more A.R. points. Most 7th and 8th graders have their A.R. points. We all can’t wait to enjoy Sky Zone. Remember the Alphabet Mat! By: Maggie and Britton The kindergartners are enjoying their trips to Pinewood Park. They were walking daily there during the week of the walk-a-thon, playing there, and then walking back. They miss the old wooden playground, but are still enjoying their time at Pinewood Park. After Memorial Day they started traveling there every Tuesday and Thursday to eat lunch. They had fun playing at the splash pad too. Every day the kindergartners write in their journals. They have been working on first grade math to get themselves ready for next Fall. By the end of the school year they would have finished the Children’s Bible. Grace’s birthday was on the 23rd and she turned six. Kindergartners are excited for the end of the school year. Mr. Nikon By: Maggie For a few months in the year, the fifth, sixth, seventh, and eighth grades have had a student teacher, Mr. Nikon. We are very thankful for the time he spent helping us learn. He was from Thailand and is going back to teach children there. He attended Kuyper College/ Cornerstone University. We are very thankful and hope that he will prosper in Thailand. We all liked his teaching style. He worked hard to help us learn. He will be a great teacher in Thailand. Fifth and Sixth Grade Class Life By: Griffin This month, the fifth and sixth graders are finishing numerous projects and class subjects. We finished our third novel of the year, A Wrinkle in Time, by Madeline L’Engle. We just started our fourth novel, Island of the Blue Dolphins, by Scott O’Dell. We have dedicated our entire time from our reading curriculum, to these books. A new activity to count down the days in school is that we have balloons hanging from the ceiling. It includes a new activity every day of the year. That is it! What are you most looking forward to this summer? Swimming-2 Sleeping In-3 Traveling-1 Sports-2 Other-3 All-24
