It is acceptable for someone else to review your work. However, any material directly quoted from a published source that is longer than five words must be paraphrased or changed into your words, unless credit is given to that author. Page 2 of 4 SCHEDULE OF ASSIGNMENTS AND INSTRUCTIONS (Subject to change during the course) Chapter assignments: consist of in-depth analysis of the text material. Each question must be answered under the chapter assignments to get full credit for that session. This is not a short answer analysis but requires you to think clearly and critically analyze the material. All answers are expected to be in your own words except for short quotes from the text or other referenced material, which should be documented in the following manner (Van Wart, pg XX). Since part of this course is to evaluate your mastery of text material, I expect some reference to course materials in your homework. These summaries will be submitted to my email james.browne@wayland.wbu.edu according to the schedule below. Please put your name on the file! Format for chapter questions: Font: Times New Roman 10 or 12 pt. Paragraphs: Double Spaced. Page Setup: 1” margins all around. The minimum acceptable page length for each question is one full page of text. Term Paper: This class requires a 12 - 15 page term paper, double spaced, Times New Roman 10 or 12 point font, with 1” margins all around. The page length is for text, not including title page, abstract, or bibliography. The topic for the term paper will be selected by June 3, 2011. You will select a pubic leader for analysis in your paper. This leader needs to be an executive branch official (president, governor, mayor) or an administrative official (cabinet official, military officer, local official such as city manager or county executive, sheriff, police chief or fire chief, etc). Please do not choose elected officials other than the president, governor or mayor. You may choose a figure from history (Lincoln, Churchill, etc), but please ensure they meet the criteria. I prefer that you do not choose kings/queens because the style of government is so much different. You are to choose an issue this leader faced and discuss the context of the issue and the outcome. Then, you will analyze the decision in light of the concepts and theories discussed in the course. In order to allow enough space for adequate coverage, choose three main concepts from the text for this text. For example, discuss whether the leader was a transformational or transactional type of leader, analyze the traits that contributed to the leader’s effectiveness (or ineffectiveness if appropriate), and the leadership style exhibited by the leader. These are for demonstration only; you are free to choose which theories/concepts from the text to integrate into your paper. Feel free to ask for guidance on the topic. Don’t choose topics that are too broad for the length of the paper. I am not specifying the number of sources; it must be enough to support the points in your paper. Submit to my email james.browne@wayland.wbu.edu by August 1, 2011 at noon. Discussion Board: You also need to regularly check out the DISCUSSION BOARD in which you will have the opportunity to respond to questions regarding various topics. Prepare your responses in writing for posting on the DISCUSSION BOARD and be prepared to respond to mine (and others’) comments. I’m looking forward to some great dialogs. Don’t forget; this area is 10% of your grade so your participation is indispensable and crucial to everyone’s learning. ▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬ SESSION I – CHAPTER 1 “Introduction” Assignments for Chapter 1 due Monday, June 6, 2011 ▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬ SESSION II – CHAPTER 2 “Understanding Theories of Leadership and Leadership Styles” Assignments for Chapter 2 due Monday June 13, 2011 ▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬ SESSION III – CHAPTER 3 “Early Managerial and Transactional Theories of Leadership” Assignments for Chapter 3 due Monday, June 20, 2011 ▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬ SESSION IV – CHAPTER 4 “Charismatic and Transformational Approaches” Assignments for Chapter 5 due Monday, June 27, 2011 ▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬ SESSION V – CHAPTER 5 “Distributed and Specialized Approaches to Leadership” Assignments for Chapter 6 due Tuesday, July 5, 2011 ▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬ Page 3 of 4 SESSION VI – CHAPTER 7 “Traits That Contribute to Leader Effectiveness” Assignments for Chapter 7 due Tuesday, July 12, 2011 ▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬ SESSION VIII Term Paper Due Monday, August 1, 2011 ▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬ Page 4 of 4
