REGIONAL ARTS PROGRAM – CAWTHRA PARK
AUDITION REQUIREMENTS FOR THE 2014-15 SCHOOL YEAR
The Regional Arts Program at Cawthra Park Secondary School offers a package of specialized courses to artistically talented
students interested in Dance, Drama, Music or Visual Arts. In addition to the arts program, students study required academic
courses and optional courses to earn their Secondary School Diploma. An audition to determine the appropriateness of this
program for each student is held in January for admission the following September. The interview and audition comprise 70% of
the total mark used for acceptance into the Regional Arts Program; with the remaining 30% coming from an assessment of the
student’s academic standing (report card). A student will choose only one of the four arts in which to audition.
Dance Audition Requirements
For the 2-hour audition, the candidate will be asked to:
 participate in a 75-minute class consisting of ballet barre
warm-up, ballet centre practice, and basic modern dance
improvisation;
 perform a 45 second solo;
 answer a few questions in an interview.
The audition will be offered at two levels:
 one for students with 3 or more years of formal ballet
training and
 one for students with less formal dance training but with a
strong interest and potential for movement.
Attire for females:
 dark bodysuits (no half top), footless pink tights, ballet
shoes
Attire for males:
 form fitting T-shirt, footless tights or black shorts, dance
belt, ballet shoes
Long hair must be tied back and hair should be secured off
your face; no jewelry, no gum, no baggy T-shirts or any
additional warm-up attire.
During the audition, we will be evaluating technique,
presentation, musicality, posture and placement, discipline and
concentration, risk-taking, imagination, creative expression,
interpretation and general aptitude and potential for success in
the Dance program.
Music Audition Requirements
For the audition, the candidate will be asked to:
 perform technical study designed for brass, woodwinds,
percussion, acoustic guitar, bass or voice supplied by
Cawthra Park Secondary School
 perform a solo piece (pianist, vocalists, guitar, bass, brass
and woodwinds) 2 pieces for piano
 perform a short sight piece for instrument or
 voice
 perform technical requirements for your instrument
 answer some basic theory questions
 clap and sing back melodies by ear
 answer a few questions in an interview
Practice rooms will be available prior to the audition so that a
student may warm-up.

Visual Arts Audition Requirements
For the audition, the candidate will be asked to:
 attend a half-day art class at Cawthra Park and complete a
still life pencil drawing and other projects for evaluation,
 bring a portfolio consisting of the following: four new
required art works (specifics are available on the school
website under Regional Arts>Visual Art) and five previous
art pieces showing the candidate’s creative abilities in a
variety of media, with many different subjects and ideas;
 include a three-dimensional piece (sculpture), or a photo of
one;
 include at least one of your best school projects;
 include one art work that is entirely of your own ideas (not
done for school or class);
 include a sketchbook of a variety of drawings, artworks and
ideas (showing a collection of your work over time);
 include paintings and drawings, photography, original
design and computer work;
 answer a few questions in an interview.
It is important to include some coloured artworks, and artworks
that show imagination and effort. All portfolio work must be
original, not copied from pictures of other artists’ work.
Portfolios are to be brought to the audition/interview at the end
of January.
Drama Audition Requirements
For the audition, the candidate will be asked to:
 present the monologue that the candidate has selected and
memorized from the list of monologues available on school
website;
 present the monologue a second time, experimenting and
varying some aspects based on the adjudicators direction —
this may take the form of an improvisation or role-play;
 present a reading of a short passage from another play —
you will have time to read the passage over and ask
questions if you have any;
 answer a few questions in an interview.
Arrive 10 minutes prior to your audition. Candidates should wear
appropriate audition attire: loose fitting, casual clothing. Long
hair must be tied back and hair should be secured off your
face. No jewelry. No gum.
