Reynolds Audition/Portfolio Review Information 2014
Auditions are for CLASS PLACEMENT ONLY—They are not for acceptance!
Students who have had a complete K-8 Education AT SCHOOL in an arts discipline may enter
high school at the Intermediate level in that discipline. Simply register for Intermediate
_______ (Band, Orchestra, etc.) and you will be placed accordingly. If you believe that your
skills/experiences place you at a proficient or advanced level and would like to audition for
placement, please schedule an audition/portfolio review (directions below). If you have not had
a particular art for all three years of middle school and believe that you would benefit from
being in a level different from Beginning, please audition for placement. Students who audition
should prepare an Arts Resume (link on the Arts Magnet part of the Reynolds website
www.wsfcs.k12.nc.us/reynolds). Resumes should be sent to Arts Magnet Director, Karen
Morris, at ksmorris@wsfcs.k12.nc.us no later than your audition date.
Band—Public school students who auditioned for All-County, All-District, or All-State do not
need to audition for placement. Mr. James will use your scores from competition. All other
students should contact Derrick James at dpjames@wsfcs.k12.nc.us to schedule an individual
audition.
Orchestra—If you are NOT in the WS Youth Orchestra and wish to audition for placement in the
highest Orchestra Ensemble, please contact Margaret Rehder at mrehder@wsfcs.k12.nc.us to
schedule an audition. Students will play a scale (as many octaves as they can), sight read, and
will need to prepare to play ½ page of music of their choice.
Piano—Students may register for Beginning Piano without auditioning. Students with piano
experience will want to audition for placement with Dr. Moss. Auditions are Sunday, February
2nd from 3-5 and may be scheduled through the RJR Arts Magnet Office
(ksmorris@wsfcs.k12.nc.us or 703-4145). Dr. Moss may be contacted directly if that audition
time is not convenient (rbmoss@wsfcs.k12.nc.us). Students should prepare a piece of their
choice.
Guitar—Students may register for Beginning Classical Guitar without auditioning. Students with
guitar experience will want to audition for placement with Mr. Chamis. Auditions are Sunday,
February 2nd from 3-5 and may be scheduled through the RJR Arts Magnet Office
(ksmorris@wsfcs.k12.nc.us or 703-4145). Mr. Chamis may be contacted directly if that audition
time is not convenient (mwchamis@wsfcs.k12.nc.us). Students will meet the teacher, play a
short piece of music of your choice, and take a brief music theory assessment.
Chorus—Students may register for Beginning Chorus without auditioning. Students with choral
experience may audition for placement with Mr. Hicks Saturday, February 1 st from 10:30-2 and
Sunday, February 2nd from 3-5. Contact the Arts Magnet Office or Mr. Hicks directly with
questions/audition help (rjrsings@gmail.com). Students will meet the teacher, sing America
the Beautiful, do a vocal warm up, sight read, and harmonize.
Theatre Arts—Auditions for students with an extensive involvement in community theatre or
private Drama lessons will be February 1st and will include a portfolio, a written assessment,
and an audition. Complete information is on Mrs. Moody’s webpage at
http://wsfcs.k12.nc.us//Domain/618. You must register with Mrs. Moody—the link is on her
website.
Dance—Students may register for Beginning Dance without auditioning. Students who wish to
be placed in the Intermediate, Proficient, or Advanced dance classes will want to submit a
resume and audition. Dance Resumes are due to the RJ Reynolds Arts Magnet Office (Karen
Morris—Director) no later than February 2nd. The resume template is on the Arts Magnet
webpage and the dance teachers’ webpages. Videotaped auditions are due to Mrs. Reece or
Mrs. Hailey by March 14th. Live auditions will be February 2nd at 3 PM. Complete instructions
are on Mrs. Reece’s and Mrs. Hailey’s websites. Videotaped auditions include an introduction
section, a flexibility and technique section, and a movement section.
Visual Arts—Students who took Visual Arts 6th, 7th, and 8th grade at a WSFCS public middle school will
enter at the Intermediate Level. They will be assessed at their middle schools and will select two Level 2
Visual Arts courses as freshmen (each of these courses is ½ credit). These options are Drawing 1,
Painting 1, Introduction to Art History, EMedia (Digital Art), Digital Photography 1, and 3-Dimensional
Design. Students who have community arts experience, but not a complete K-8 education in visual arts
are invited to have a written assessment February 1st or 2nd in the RJR Arts Building. Sign up for this
written assessment through the Arts Magnet Office no later than January 27th. Complete information
on this assessment and the Visual Arts progression can be found on the Arts Magnet part of the RJR
Website. Students who believe their experiences/talents may place them at the Proficient Level will
need to have a written assessment, a portfolio review, and an essay. The written assessments will be
given February 1st and 2nd. Bring your digital portfolio (CD or flashdrive) and essay at the time of the
written assessment.
All students will be given feedback on their auditions/assessments by the end of February
and will be placed in classes accordingly. If your registration paperwork is due to your school
before you hear back from auditions, register for the arts discipline (i.e. Band rather than
Wind Ensemble….). We will work with the Guidance department to be sure you are placed in
the correct class.
