General Information
Absences
Advising the school of your child/children’s absence is essential. In the event that your child is to be or has
been absent from school please:
 send a note/email to the teacher explaining the absence
OR
 phone the school office before or on the day of the absence.
Access
There are three entrances to the school:
1. Cowley Street,
2. Martin Street and
3. The footbridge at the back of the Stones Corner Library.
Most parents park behind the library at Stones Corner or Salisbury Street when dropping off children in the
morning and picking them up in the afternoon.
Martin St Stop Drop and GO is a NO Standing and NO Parking zone. Please ensure your child knows
when you will be using this zone. In the afternoon children are supervised until 3.15pm at the Martin St. gate.
Children are NOT supervised at the footbridge entrance. Please use Martin Street to access the Outside
School Hours Care facility both before and after school.
Public transport to Buranda SS includes Buranda Train Station and Stone’s Corner Busway Station.
All pedestrian gates are open from 8.15am to 9.30am and again at 2.45pm to 3.30pm.
The Martin Street gate and Cowley Street gates have an intercom between 9.30 and 2.30 which enable you
to contact the school office and have the gate opened for you from the office.
The footbridge gate does NOT have an intercom.
There is NO parking on school premises without permission from the Principal. When accessing the school
between 9.30am and 2.30pm (e.g. picking children up early, appointments, volunteer work at school etc.)
please use the Cowley Street entrance and park in the teachers’ car park. All visitors must report to the
school office. Please leave your registration number at the office to prevent congestion in the car park.
Bell times
Your child is required to be at school before the 8.55am bell. Lessons commence at 9.00am. Please ensure
your child arrives on time as late children disrupt the learning of the other children. Any child who arrives
after the school bell must go to the office to pick up a late slip so that it can be registered on the school roll.
School finishes at 3.00pm. If you expect to be late picking up children please ring the school to let us know.
Booklists
In November each year a booklist order is disseminated for parents for the following year. Booklist order
forms and payment can be returned to the school office and book boxes will be delivered to school.
Camps
Each year the children in Years 5, 6 and 7 have the opportunity to attend a school camp.
 Year 5 - Jacob’s Well
 Year 6/7 - Maroon Dam

General Information
Contacting your child’s teacher
Your child/children’s teachers do wish to hear of any matters which you feel are important to your child’s
day at school. If you need time to talk with the teacher please arrange a meeting. Please consider other
options for example a note or email. Please consider the teacher’s need for lesson preparation before and
after school. We ask that teachers are not interrupted during teaching and learning times.
Contributing to your child’s classroom
There are many opportunities to contribute to your child’s classroom. Some of these include reading support,
helping with computer skills, helping organise resource material, sharing any special skill or talents you may
have etc. Your teacher will let you know if these skills and talents fit with the current curriculum program.
Confidentiality and impartiality are of the utmost importance when working with children in classrooms.
When volunteering to work in the classroom you must sign in at the office first.
Eating Times
First break 11.00am to 11.45am
This is the main meal time in the day. Please show your child the food you expect them to eat during this
time. The children are required to spend 11-11.15am sitting and eating their lunch. At 11.15am a bell
indicates play time.
Second break 1.15pm to 1.45pm
This is an afternoon tea break. Similarly, eating time is from 1.15-1.25pm, then a play bell rings.
Enrolments
Prep enrolments are taken from day 1 of the school year prior to the child starting school. An enrolment plan
operates at Buranda SS. Please see the link to enrolments on our website. If you wish to enrol children in the
older grades please contact the school office.
Homework
The Buranda SS Homework Policy is available via the website. Please address any concerns about
homework to your child’s teacher.
Garden
All classes attend a half hour lesson each week in the school garden. Children are required to wear their
school hat during garden lessons. The students conduct stalls to sell produce which they grow in the garden.
Produce stalls are run intermittently at afternoon pick up time, when produce has been harvested.
Lost Property
Please name your child’s uniforms, lunchbox and school bags. Lost property is collected in a basket outside
the staffroom. Parents can easily access this basket and check for their child’s lost property at any time.
Lunchboxes
Please pack a healthy lunch for your child. Junk food does not provide the level of nutrition that children
need for their brains to learn whilst they are at school. Please do not send soft drink to school.
Medication
Please note that NO medication is kept in the classrooms. All medication must be handed into the school
office by an adult. All medication must be in the original container supplied by the pharmacy and include
the name of the prescribing doctor. The medication register must be filled in by the Parent/Carer. Please
understand that we have no leeway in this area. We can only dispense medication following proof of
doctor’s directions. The exception to this is a Ventolin puffer which may be kept at the child’s classroom.
The teacher must be notified.

Some children bring mobile phones to school. These need to be signed in to the office on arrival at school
and collected at 3pm.
Money at school

ensure that all money is placed in the box by 9.00 am in the morning. All money will be receipted.
Newsletter
The school newsletter is distributed weekly on Wednesday afternoons. The newsletter is full of information
from the principal, your child’s class and P&C. Reading the newsletter is the main way to keep informed of
with what is happening at school. Important dates are highlighted at the front of the newsletter. Please notify
the office if you wish to receive the newsletter via email in pdf format. The newsletter will also be uploaded

PARENTS AND CITIZENS ASSOCIATION
Buranda SS has a hardworking and committed P&C association comprised of parents and teachers from the
school, and members of the local community. All interested parents are encouraged to come along and take
part. Some activities of the P&C include fundraising, fetes, social functions and tuckshop. P&C meetings are
held on the first Wednesday of each month, beginning at 6:15pm and childcare is provided. We look
forward to seeing you throughout the year. Attending P&C meetings a good way to meet other parents and
teachers and to understand how the cogs of the system work.
School charges and voluntary contributions
Students are required to have all necessary books and equipment as outlined on the booklists. Families will
also be expected to meet the costs of excursions and performances as they arise. Students in Years 6 and 7
will need to purchase a German booklet from the office each term ($3 per term). The school would
appreciate a voluntary contribution of $20 for each child. This goes towards reprographics and other
materials to support the curriculum.
Sun protection
School hats are available from the uniform shop. Children need to wear an appropriate broad brimmed hat
whilst playing outside. Caps are not permitted. It is also advisable for children to apply sunscreen before
school and to bring extra to reapply during the day. Children should bring water bottles for classroom use in
the hot summer months.
Swimming season
School swimming lessons are conducted in Terms 1 and 4 (with the exception of prep who will only swim in
Term 4). Students will require togs, towel and a swimming cap. Goggles are optional. Please clearly name
all your child/children’s swimming gear.
