What do our parents appreciate about our school … Tony Kennedy asked our parents at the P&C Meeting what they like most about our school. Their responses: Teachers have a very high care value for their students Students and parents have a strong sense of belonging Teachers know the students so well and strive to assist them to progress Teachers are very approachable and willing to work with parents to solve issues their kids are having Very personal The school works to be part of the community It provides for continuous education from Prep to Year 10. What are the best bits for you? Our emerging School focus:: Learner Agency Learning that mobilises student responsibility for active engagement in learning and enhances students’ critical and creative thinking Many thanks to the parents who attended the P&C Meeting to discuss our next 4 year plan – your input was very much appreciated and will shape the final draft. Thought for the Week “Imagination is the highest kite one can fly.” Lauren Bacall In Brief Special Tuckshop for this Friday. See menu attached. Library Books – Year 10 return by Friday, Education Week and World Teachers’ Day This week is Education Week and Friday is World Teachers’ Day. This provides a wonderful opportunity to recognise the wonderful focus our school provides on supporting the on going learning of every student. Be sure to pass on your positive thoughts to the staff that support your children’s learning. The letter below provides a bigger picture of this learning focus with a growth mindset. A letter from a teacher that cares … Dear Parents, Your child does have natural talent, abilities and intelligence in some areas- but that’s not the end of the story. These things are not fixed traits. They may have a gift for story writing, art, maths or sport, but it needs to be grown. They may not be good at science, history or working with others…YET! Whatever the case for your child- the reality is that natural talent, abilities and intelligence are developed over time. Through effort, persistence, practice and focussed attention. The brain is a highly adaptive organ- it changes like a muscle through a process called neuroplasticity. From the cradle to the grave- our brains are always changing. The malleable brain is the most interesting, meaningful discovery of the last 15 years that has a huge impact on the education of your child. Help your kids, and help them to understand the growth mindset. Because smart is not something your are- it’s something you get. Fit is not something you are- it’s something you get. Good at sport is not something you areit’s something you get. Jonathan Thurston had to learn to catch the football the same way everyone else does. Einstein learned how to count starting to 10, just like everyone else. Every skill your child can perform has been acquiredthrough applying themselves to it: reading, walking, talking, swimming, riding a bike. that will provide professional links for future professional learning opportunities. Footwear at School Students need to wear sturdy footwear in which to undertake the multitude of activities they need to participate in on a daily basis. As a workplace, we encourage closed in shoes like joggers. Some students prefer sandals during hot weather. Please ensure that these shoes are unable to slip off easily, e.g., closed toe and heel and are designed for function not fashion, e.g., low heel height and a sturdy make for ease of running and playing. Closed in shoes are workplace health and safety requirements for the Science Lab, Hospitality Centre and Manual Arts. Thongs or slip-ons are not suitable for general school use. Does your child turn 5 by the 30 June in 2016? Enrol for Prep now! Now is the time to secure your child’s place for Prep 2016 at Killarney P-10 State School. Stop telling your kids that they are smart, gifted, talented, bright, clever, or a “natural”. This might “pump up their tyres” and make them feel good for a moment- but it doesn’t help them keep growing their abilities. What happens when they get an answer wrong? Does that mean they’re dumb and lacking talent? As an integral part of caring, country school, our Prep class prepares children for school in an easy-going, family-type atmosphere – perfect for nurturing the best in your child. They can’t control how naturally gifted they are- so don’t praise them for it. Instead, praise them for their efforts, persistence and the way they tackle challenges when they arise- they can control these things, and this will grow their abilities. Real learning only occurs when it is hard- when it stretches them. How do they respond to the struggle of learning? How hard do they work at growing their talent, abilities and intelligence? Let’s encourage the process of learning. We should encourage the behaviour that we want to see the most. Value the process, more than the performance- then the performance will look after itself. Interested? Sincerely, Check out our school’s website at www.killarness.eq.edu.au Learning from visiting Canberra schools I had the marvellous opportunity to travel to Canberra with over 40 other principals to be immersed in the Canberra schools to explore what they were doing to promote the highest levels of student learning. We visited a range of schools from senior colleges to P-10 schools and public and independent schools to explore how they were making a difference for their students. It was interesting to find that their challenges were our challenges and that our school’s improvement journey and plan for the next 4 years will keep us at the forefront of learning innovation and achievements in the country. The opportunity was a wonderful two way learning opportunity A caring environment Professional staff Supported literacy and numeracy focus Helping you to bridge the home school environment A positive choice for your child Where you and your child are important! What parents understand and say makes a difference. Teach your kids the growth mindset, and help them thrive in learning and in life. A teacher who cares Please call in to collect an information package or call the school on 4664 6333 for an appointment to discuss your child’s education. Attendance – Ready to Learn Every Day Please ensure your child attends every day. The graph shows last week’s attendance levels by class. Thanks for supporting students to be ready to learn every day. excited Prep class that got to catch up with her in all her regalia. A fun time was had by all, with many students lining up for autographs and to have a chat with our visitors. Attendance = Learning Curriculum Insert Beyond your Comfort Zone A ‘comfort zone’ is that limited set of behaviours that a person will engage without becoming anxious. Alternatively it describes that set of behaviours that have become comfortable, without creating a sense of risk. A person's personality can often be described by their comfort zones. For example highly successful people may routinely step outside their comfort zones to accomplish what they wish. These people are often extroverted, confident and very socially connected. A comfort zone is a type of mental conditioning that causes a person to create and operate mental boundaries that are often not real or realistic. To step outside a person's comfort zone, they must experiment with new and different behaviours, and then experience the new and different responses that then occur within their environment. Fear of the unknown keeps people in their comfort zones. Every time we try something new, there will always be a degree of nervousness. We can all remember trying something very nerve racking, like going on a roller coaster for the first time. When you got off, you had conquered it and couldn’t wait to get back on! This is an example of stepping outside your comfort zone, experiencing something new, conquering it and guess what? It now becomes part of your new ‘stretched’ comfort zone. That is the beauty of comfort zones; as you try new things they become part of your comfort zone. That’s the moral of the story, be a risk taker, overcome your fears, try new things and expand your comfort zone. It’s the best way that you can have fun, explore new opportunities and have an adventurous life! “I used to have a comfort zone where I knew I wouldn't fail. The same four walls and busywork were really more like jail.” My Comfort Zone “If you put yourself in a position where you have to stretch outside your comfort zone, then you are forced to expand your consciousness. “ Les Brown School News Day for Daniel – Friday 30th October School community members are invited to wear red on Friday to recognise Day for Daniel.
