1. Summary Statement: State the major function(s) of the position and its role in the
university. Attach an organizational chart with positions, ranges, and names for the division
which reflects the position in it as well as those supervised in the department. (This section is
used for advertisement of the position.)
The Associate Dean, College of Agriculture, Biotechnology, & Natural Resources (CABNR) Academic
Affairs provides leadership for all aspects of academic programs in CABNR and assists departments
with planning academic programs. The Associate Dean assists departments to initiate new programs,
develop new curricula and revise existing curricula for both undergraduate/graduate programs as well
as representing the Dean of CABNR on academic matters, when requested. Areas of direct and
indirect supervisory responsibility are the Student Center which includes student advisement,
recruitment, retention, career placement and development of scholarship; oversight of assessment
programs; and administration of the academic budget. The Associate Dean reports to the Dean,
CABNR.

60% - Student Services
 Develop policies and procedures and coordinate with department chairs and faculty to ensure
student advisement
 Recruit students including contacts with high schools and community colleges
 Travel to schools and community colleges, career fairs and other UNR recruitment activities
 Maintain data and analyze retention rates and factors affecting retention and advocate policies
to improve retention
 Develop internship opportunities and disseminate information on career opportunities and
available positions; ensure proper student advisement in career planning
 Develop scholarship opportunities
 Work with scholarship committee for distribution of monies to students and evaluate criteria for
awards
 Oversee committee to select CABNR Teacher of the Year
 Supervise staff
 Oversee the maintenance of student records
 Monitor Data Book records and provide database to Dean
 Work with Student Center and Departments to develop brochures and other publications for
departments
 Monitor and supervise Student Ambassador activities
 Ensure efficient use of Student Center space/computer facilities
 Administer Student Center professional and classified budget, student wages and operations
 Extend internal/external internship opportunities for undergraduate students
25% - Academic Affairs
 Administer student evaluations of courses
 Administer academic budget
 With the approval of the Dean, allocate instructional funds to individual departments.
 Advise faculty on development opportunities
 Provide input to Dean on faculty evaluations in teaching

Assist with departmental reviews of Cooperative State Research, Education and Extension
Service (CSREES) funding opportunities
Serve as CABNR representative to the University Courses and Curriculum Committee and the
Academic Programs Section (National and Western) of the National Association of State
Universities and Land Grant Colleges
Chair the CABNR Curriculum Committee
Represent CABNR at university Associate Academic Dean meetings
Attend graduation ceremonies
Assist in updating existing programs
Work with Departments to revise curricula
10% - Outreach and Development
 Serve as administrative member of CABNR Friends and Alumni Committee
 Participate in Rural Tours and Career Fairs
 Liaison with the USDA Food and Agricultural Education Information System
 Participate in development and advancement activities of the college
 Work with Departments to establish research opportunities within CABNR for high school

3. Describe the level of freedom to take action and make decisions with or without
supervision and how the results of the work performed impact the department, division and/or
the university as a whole.
Level of Freedom:
The Associate Dean, CABNR Academic Affairs, reports to the Dean of CABNR and makes decisions
without supervision on most academic matters. The individual has the responsibility to constantly
communicate with the Dean on all academic issues. Routine academic affairs duties require no
supervision. New initiatives or policies would require consultation with the Dean and approval.
Implementation of all academic affairs policies are the responsibility of the Associate Dean.
Impact:
Departmental program planning, revision of curricula and timely development of new proposals for
courses and curriculum committees and for Board of Regents can significantly affect student
enrollment, FTE generation as well as student careers. Timely and consistent student evaluation of
faculty is critical to faculty development and the excellence of academic programs. Student Center
operation is vital to advertising the college, student retention and the university programs throughout
the state. Developing scholarship opportunities, setting criteria for awards and ensuring all
scholarship conditions are met expands scholarship resources which impacts recruitment and
retention of students. The work performed has significant impact on the five CABNR departments, the
college and the entire university.
