1. Summary Statement: State the major function(s) of the position and its role in the
university. Attach an organizational chart with positions, ranges, and names for the division
which reflects the position in it as well as those supervised in the department. (This section is
used for advertisement of the position.)
The Coordinator, Student Affairs and Outreach for the College of Agriculture, Biotechnology and
Natural Resources (CABNR) reports to the Associate Dean for Academic Affairs. The Coordinator
works closely with the Associate Dean for Academic Affairs, the Dean/Director, the Development
Officer and all departments within the college as well as Admission and Records, the Financial Aid
Office, the Scholarship Office, the Office for Prospective Students, the Honors Program, and the
Advising Center among others. This position is a key resource for these offices, for college faculty,
and for prospective and present students throughout this and Western Undergraduate Exchange
states. This person serves as the coordinator and resource contact for academic advisement for all
students and faculty members in CABNR and assists in assessment of departmental recruitment and
retention programs. In addition, the position contains a significant outreach component. The
Coordinator is a demonstrable face of the college and must be familiar with research, educational and
outreach directions of the college and the field laboratories.

40% - Recruitment Functions
 Under the supervision of CABNR’s Associate Dean for Academic Affairs Organizes, initiates
and implements all CABNR recruitment materials necessary for departmental participation in
all university and college recruitment/retention functions and attends as a representative of
CABNR
 Participates in CABNR Departmental outreach activities including, but not limited to, such
organizations as Cooperative Extension, FFA, and 4H
 Maintains initial and periodic contacts and establish good working relationships with NV
community college and high school counselors, and, with agriculture and science teachers for
recruitment efforts
 Serves as a resource for prospective students regarding the majors offered within CABNR,
general academic advisement, financial aid, career opportunities, internship opportunities, and
campus/community resources
 Participates and organizes CABNR activites for Nevada Bound, Directions, Previews, College
Fairs and other OPS/SS events
 Participates in northern and southern Nevada and northern California high school and
community college career fairs
 Interacts with TMCC, WMC, CSN and GBC councelors to provide up to date information
regarding CABNR majors and career potential
 Actively encourages non-traditional local residents to consider course work and degree
programs within CABNR and assists those individuals in dealing with admission, identifying an
advisor, and other issues that are often difficult for returning students
 Serves as faculty advisor to and recruits students to the CABNR Student Ambassadors.
Initiates and implements a yearly retreat for the CABNR Student Ambassadors, and initiates
and implements Ambassador recruiting activities to include periodic visits to high schools
throughout the state and good neighbor counties visiting students and counselors; training
outstanding CABNR students in leadership and in public speaking in a manner that allows
students to serve in college recruitment activities and that encourages team building; and,
actively working with CABNR’s academic staff who participate in programs that actively
engage high school students

40% - Retention Responsibilities
 Organizes the CABNR portion of Wolfpack Welcome and represents CABNR at this function
with the Dean, Associate Dean and faculty of the college
 Maintains contact with and advises CABNR’s ASUN student senator on ASUN activities
 Communicates regularly with and coordinates assistance and academic advisement efforts for
CABNR students to ensure that they receive accurate and timely advisement
 Maintains a database of current, accurate, and reliable information on all students enrolled in
CABNR and of those who have left CABNR and provides this information to CABNR
departments for assessment
 Initiates and updates, with input from CABNR departments, a “Change of Major” exit letter sent
to all students who leave the college; compiles and analyzes responses for trends and
provides this information to the Associate Dean and Departmental Heads for appropriate
action
 Serves as a member of the CABNR Retention Committee.
 Helps co-ordinate and encourage Departmental based “Welcome Back” activities and all other
Departmental based retention activities.
20% - Administrative Responsibilities
 Serves on the CABNR Leadership Team and meets regularly with chairs and advisors in
CABNR to keep them apprised of advising, recruitment and retention issues within each
academic unit and the college as a whole
 Serves as a contact for accurate academic advising information and distributes updates to
CABNR faculty and staff members who act as advisors; conducts advising workshops each
semester for updating materials to advisors
 Develops contacts, acts as a liaison, and fosters good working relationships with academic
representatives in other colleges, the Academic Advising Center, and Student Services to
allow for enhanced communication to facilitate transitions for new and continuing students
 Maintains all student files for CABNR to include transcripts, DARS, change of majors, etc., as
well as a database of pertinent contact information on CABNR students
 Participates and oversees the development of the web page for CABNR Student Center and
Student Ambassadors
 Serves as CABNR Scholarship Coordinator; implements college policies on scholarships and
internships; and, recruits CABNR Departmental participation in the implementation of these
policies
 Assists CABNR Associate Dean in CABNR Friends and Alumni activities
 Serves as CABNR representative to Target 500
3. Describe the level of freedom to take action and make decisions with or without
supervision and how the results of the work performed impact the department, division and/or
the university as a whole.
Level of Freedom:
The Coordinator has considerable freedom to make decisions on the day-to-day functioning of the
CABNR student center, training of CABNR academic faculty advisors, the updating of faculty on
advising matters, and the initiation and maintenance of recruiting contacts. In addition, recruitment of
student ambassadors and team building activities are at the discretion of the Coordinator. The
Coordinator will provide input to the Associate Dean and Dean of CABNR on overall policy decisions,
such as (but not limited to) determination of criteria for the award of CABNR scholarships,
recruitment/retention focus, and outreach activities and programs.
Impact:
The advising, recruitment and retention of qualified students from diverse backgrounds is one of
CABNR’s primary goals. The Coordinator will be one of the first contacts for prospective students. A

positive contact will give new students someone to connect with upon their enrollment at the university
and will contribute to the retention of these students.
Contact with the wider community (parents, prospective students, counselors, community leaders,
etc.) will open lines of communication, which will enhance the college’s and university’s ability to
respond positively to the community. This person is often the only and first face of CABNR seen by
CABNR stakeholders. Within this larger community the Coordinator must be familiar with research,
educational and outreach directions of the college and the field laboratories.
