Austin Peay State University Orientation Coordinator--Summer Welcome/Orientation Position Description The Coordinator for the Summer Welcome/Orientation program for new students is an APSU student who works with Academic Support, Student Affairs staff, Advising Coordinators, university faculty, and student Orientation Assistants to assure that summer programs for new students are conducted in a meaningful and professional manner. The Coordinator is an active member of the university community, understands student success, and is committed to positive experiences for new students who are making the necessary transition to meet APSU expectations. Student Coordinators help facilitate events and oversee the training of Orientation Assistants. The Student Coordinator--Summer Welcome/Freshman Orientation will be an APSU student who has attained junior standing with a cumulative GPA of 2.75 or higher, has a clear formal discipline record, and has demonstrated leadership skills as a student at APSU. The New Student Orientation Coordinator will report to the Coordinator, New Student Programs, Academic Support, and will participate in a 2-day training session preceding Summer Welcome. The duties and responsibilities of this position include: 1. Openly and honestly communicate with the Academic Support staff, Student Affairs staff, and Advising Coordinators in a timely manner. 2. Develop a group/team environment that welcomes new students and family members and focuses on their well being. 3. Serve as a resource person for and oversee training of Orientation Assistants. 4. Be a positive role model and mentor for assistants and staff as well as for students and families. 5. Be willing to commit to summer employment which permits working at all Summer Welcome sessions and Freshman Orientation. 6. With direction from Advising Coordinators, develop individual assignments for Orientation Assistants. 7. Perform other administrative duties as assigned by supervisors. 8. Model professional behavior at all times. 9. Assist with Welcome Week activities for new students (4 hours.). 10. Oversee and maintain the Summer Welcome assistant timesheets. Qualifications of the successful Student Coordinator: Display at all times a positive mature attitude regarding APSU, personnel, and programs offered Demonstrate effective communication and interpersonal skills Documented leadership experience at APSU. Creative; can solve problems without displaying frustration Dependable; on time and in place for all assigned activities Follows directions and gives instructions clearly and concisely Accept responsibility for decisions and see duties through to completion. Experience as a peer mentor, peer tutor, or student leader in previous summer programs preferable. Computer Literacy: Word processing and spreadsheet skills; can teach new students use of AP Web.
