Austin Peay State University Orientation Assistant—Summer Welcome/Orientation Position Description The Orientation Assistant for the Summer Welcome/Orientation program is an APSU student who works with the Academic Support staff, Student Affairs staff, Advising Coordinators, and university faculty to assist new students when they enroll in the university and while they participate in orientation and Welcome Week activities. Orientation Assistants guide new students and serve as a resource for freshmen and transfer students who are learning what the campus has to offer them both personally and academically. As a role model and mentor, the Assistant is committed to student success and positive experiences for new students beginning with their Summer Welcome through their first year at APSU. The Orientation Assistant—Summer Welcome/Orientation will be an APSU student who has attained sophomore standing with a cumulative GPA of 2.75 or higher, has a clear formal discipline record, and shows demonstrated leadership skills. Openly and honestly communicate with the Academic Support staff, Student Affairs staff, and Advising Coordinators in a timely manner. Contribute to a group/team environment with participants and other leaders. Serve as a resource person and consultant to new students participating in Summer Welcome, Orientation, and Welcome Week activities. Be a role model and mentor for students and staff. Participate in and lead guided discussions in structured information sessions for Orientation Assistants. Work all Summer Welcome sessions, Freshman Orientation (2.5 days,) and selected fall semester Welcome Week activities (4 hours) that focus on new students. Assist new students in using AP Web to register for classes Perform other administrative duties as assigned by supervisors. Qualifications of the successful Orientation Assistant: Displays at all time a positive mature attitude regarding APSU, personnel, and programs offered. Demonstrates effective communication and interpersonal skills. Has documented leadership experience (high school or college) Is creative and resourceful; solves problems without displaying frustration Dependable; on time and in place for all assigned activities. Follows directions; can follow through to completion of all tasks assigned. Accepts responsibility for decisions and personal actions. Has a working knowledge of APSU and all university resources Formal leadership training (LDSP or other) is desirable.
