Montgomery College TRANSFER ADVISING – General Education Program Requirements 9/20/12 Students who complete Montgomery College’s General Education Program (32-34 credits total) will meet most of the University of Maryland’s General Education Requirements, either called “CORE” or “General Education,” depending on the year students start college after high school graduation. This advice also applies to students who are undecided about a transfer destination – in-state, out-of-state, or private schools – completing M.C.’s General Education Program is recommended for all students planning to transfer. www.montgomerycollege.edu/transfer UMCP CORE Requirements – Prior to Fall 2012 Students who started at MC or any University System of Maryland (USM) school prior to fall 2012, will follow the UMCP CORE program. Montgomery College students who complete MC’s General Education Program (34 credits) will have met 34 credits required for CORE at UMCP. After transfer, students complete 2 courses, 6 credits of Advanced Studies (junior-senior level courses). ■ General Education Requirements – Fall 2012 & After Students who graduate from high school in June 2012 and after, and students who begin at MC (or any USM) fall 2012 and after, will follow UMCP's new General Education program. Montgomery College students who complete MC’s General Education Program (34 credits) will have met 34 of the 40 credits required for General Education at UMCP. ■ After transfer, students complete 2 courses, 6 credits, 3 credits of Professional Writing and one additional General Education course @ UM depending on major. It can be done in one year; however, this is based on college-level placement in Math and English, and may involve Winter and/or Summer Sessions for a realistic pace of completion. A 3.0 minimum GPA is required to be considered for transfer to UMCP @ 30 credits. Most competitive majors (LEP’s) require higher GPA’s & additional Gateway courses. It is not REQUIRED that you finish the MC General Education Program in the first year – discuss this with an adviser. Completion of an Associate’s degree (usually 2 years full-time) opens transfer scholarship opportunities & assures admission to most Maryland public four-year schools. MC students bound for UMCP are advised to enroll in the Maryland Transfer Advantage Program (MTAP) as soon as possible if eligible (not open if you intend to transfer just one semester later). Even those uncertain about applying to UMCP are encouraged to enroll - MTAP doesn’t obligate you to attend UMCP but offers guaranteed admission for many majors if you meet MTAP requirements. Find an MTAP application at www.montgomerycollege.edu/MTAP - submit form to any MC Admissions Window. Step 2: Decide when you’ll go. You may transfer after one year (30 credits); however, if you complete all 34 credits of the M.C. General Education Program, you will need only two more General Education courses at UMCP after transfer. Completion of an Associate’s degree (AA, AS or AAT) is recommended – a degree assures that you have met General Education Requirements, saves you tuition costs for the first 60 credits (two years) of a four-year degree; provides personal attention in small classes, aligns you for transfer as a junior in most majors, and may qualify you for scholarship programs. See an adviser at MC for degree completion/transfer planning. Step 3: Choose a major(s). There are over 120 different majors at UMCP. Thirteen are Limited Enrollment Programs (LEP), majors with additional competitive admissions requirements, including Gateway courses and GPA minimums. Read about LEP majors here: www.lep.umd.edu . Architecture Business Biological Sciences, Biochemistry, Chemistry, and Environmental Sciences and Policy-Biodiversity and Conservation Communication Criminology and Criminal Justice Engineering Government and Politics Journalism Landscape Architecture Psychology Step 4: Select the right math and other courses for major(s). Use ARTSYS http://artweb.usmd.edu to view math and other courses required for possible major(s). Consult with an adviser and the MC Transfer Page for more information: www.montgomerycollege.edu/transfer . Also, find in-person and e-mail Pre-Transfer Advising @ UMCP through www.transferadvising.umd.edu M T A P - The Maryland Transfer Advantage Program for community college students who intend to complete a Bachelor’s degree after transfer to the University of Maryland Students who have graduated from high school and have been admitted to or are currently enrolled at Montgomery College are encouraged to apply. MTAP Advantages: Guaranteed admission (except in competitive, LEP Majors - see website for details, www.montgomerycollege.edu/MTAP ); participation in transfer advising activities and opportunities to take University of Maryland courses at a reduced tuition while enrolled at the community college When should students apply to the Maryland Transfer Advantage Program? Maryland Transfer Advantage Program applications should be submitted by the following deadlines: Plan to Transfer to Maryland MTAP Application Deadline Must complete at least 15 credits at the community college and successfully complete MTAP requirements by this semester Spring Semester 2013 (Jan. 2013) Fall Semester 2013 (Aug. 2013) June 1, 2012 Nov. 15, 2012 Fall Semester 2012 Spring Semester 2013 How to apply: Submit your completed application to any Admissions Office on any campus of Montgomery College. Please Note: The Maryland Transfer Advantage Program does not provide special consideration for admission to Limited Enrollment Programs (visit www.lep.umd.edu for more information). Maryland Transfer Advantage students are eligible for University of Maryland, College Park programs or programs at The Universities at Shady Grove. Students who plan to transfer to Shady Grove are generally expected to have completed their associate’s degree.
