REPORT ON DORKING JUNIOR CHARITY CUP FINAL Friday 9th May
Brockham 3
Capel 0
Brockham retained the McComas Cup with a fairly comfortable victory at Meadowbank
on Friday evening in front of a large and enthusiastic crowd.
The Cup holders started vigorously but Capel’s resolute defence prevented an early
breakthrough and in their first attack created a great opportunity to take the lead. Dan
Hulbert escaped down the right touchline, crossing perfectly to an unmarked team mate
who was crowded out in the nick of time.
Brockham continued to do most of the pressing without really testing Capel’s keeper Leif
Borgust but calamity struck just past the half hour . A feeble back pass enabled an alert
Scott Minihane to pick up, evade Borgust and open Brockham’s account.
Deep into added time Brockham scored a key second goal, Minihane again with a superb
strike; a free kick near the right corner flag allowed him to swing a left foot cross into the
far top corner of the net.
The second half opened with Capel’s spirit very much alive but after six minutes they left
themselves with a mountain to climb as Vince Mortimer broke through on the right to
cleverly lift the bouncing ball over approaching defenders with the outside of his left foot.
Capel maintained their vitality and with Brockham becoming more ‘defence minded’
forced four corners in as many minutes. From one of these keeper Matt Parker maintained
the Brockham advantage by splendidly tipping over a goalbound header from Toby
Fitzgibbon. Referee Daniel Rowbotham, who had controlled the keenly contested final
well, brought matters to an end without the losers able to gain deserved consolation.
As ever the Competition has raised funds for which at least ten local charities are most
grateful, as is the Charity Cup Committee for the generosity of the competing clubs and
sponsors.
