Work performed in accordance with physician orders. Defined duties are performed in neonatal, pediatric and adult patient populations in intermediate, intensive and emergency care areas DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: 2.1 Perform all duties and responsibilities of the Respiratory Therapists and other subordinates. 2.2 Administer oxygen, aerosol, and humidity therapy. 2.3 Monitors and maintains airway clearance for assigned patients utilizing adjunctive procedures such as mechanical suction, percussion and postural drainage. 2.4 Delivers aerosolized medications for inhalation per physician prescription. 2.5 Provide chest physical therapy, and hyperinflation therapy as order by physician. 2.6 Obtains, analyzes and assesses arterial blood gas and acid-base data, and report results to the attending physician. 2.7 Administer Nitric Oxide Gas, and Heliox gas therapy. 2.8 Facilitate emergency airway procedure. Perform Orotracheal intubation as needed. 2.9 Apply appropriate mechanical ventilator modalities ad initiated by physician order. No: Date of Issue: Issue: Page: AIC/AN/J 004 08/01/2012 1 2 of 4 respiratory therapist JOB DESCRIPTION: (Cont’d) 2.10 Evaluates and manages all assigned patients receiving mechanical life support ventilation. 2.11 Adjust mechanical ventilation according to clinical situation with consultation of attending physician. 2.12 Perform beside pulmonary mechanics measures for ventilated patients. 2.13 Apply Non-Invasive Positive Pressure Ventilation (NPPV), Continuation Positive Airways Pressure (CPAP) and Bi-Level Positive Airway Pressure (BiPAP) as per physician order. 2.14 Evaluate mechanically ventilated patients for extubation readiness. 2.15 Formulate weaning plan with consultation of attended physician. 2.16 Suggest and apply appropriate weaning methods of extubation. 2.17 Institute and monitor oscillating ventilation for paediatric and adult patients. 2.18 Monitor cardiopulmonary stats of all assigned patients. 2.19 Interpret clinical data to optimize patient clinical objectives. 2.20 Perform Capnography monitoring. 2.21 Perform tracheotomy tube changes. 2.22 Transport patients requiring mechanical ventilation or airway protection. 2.23 Assist physician during Bronchoscopy procedure. 2.24 Prepares and maintains emergency kits for airway intubation. 2.25 Serve as member of the emergency cardiac team. 2.26 Participate in clinical rounds with physicians, nurses and other health care providers. 2.27 Develop and suggest patient care plans during intensive care rounds. No: Date of Issue: Issue: Page: AIC/AN/J 004 08/01/2012 1 3 of 4 respiratory therapist JOB DESCRIPTION: (Cont’d) 3.0 2.28 Evaluate appropriateness of medical orders. 2.29 Provide orientation and preceptorship for newly employed respiratory therapists and students. 2.30 Instruct patients and/or family members in the use of therapeutic techniques as prescribed by physician. 2.31 Maintain accurate documentation according to the type of modality, patient response, notes any adverse reaction of patients receiving respiratory modalities and notify clinical supervisor, attending physician, and responsible nursing staff of any adverse reaction. 2.32 Adhere to Infection Control standards, safety and environmental health practices. 2.33 Assist in reviewing policy, procedures and practice guidelines. 2.34 Assist in the evaluation of respiratory products and equipment. 2.35 Maintain and monitor adequate supply inventory of assigned unit. 2.36 Perform other duties related to accepted tasks of the critical care respiratory therapists. HOURS OF WORK: 48 hours weekly. 4.0 REQUIREMENTS: 4.1 Qualification or Relevant Experience: 4.1.1. Bachelor Degree of Science in respiratory Care 4.1.2 Registered Respiratory Therapist or eaquivalent.
