COURSE DESCRIPTION:
A three semester hour course in the 2nd year medical curriculum consisting of a survey
of normal and abnormal aspects of the respiratory system.
After a discussion of the
embryology, the normal structure and function of the upper and lower respiratory system, the
student will study pathology and pathophysiology and the common disorders of the respiratory
system. The students will study a series of clinical cases gaining some experience developing a
differential diagnosis and management plan. The psychosocial impact of pulmonary disease will
be discussed as well as an introduction to environmental respiratory diseases.

Multidisciplinary Conference:
The case to be discussed at the conference will be distributed several days in
advance of the conference. The students are expected to work up the case prior to
the conference. In order to get the most out of these, it is imperative that you
work these cases up prior to the class discussion. A pair of students will present
the case to the class and lead the discussion.

Small Group Tutorials
Attendance is mandatory; an absence will result in a grade of I for that
session, which must be made up to avoid an I for the course. Students will receive
cases about one week in advance of the tutorial session and are expected to work
up the case prior to the tutorial session. Two students in each group will facilitate
the case discussion. All students are expected to participate in the case
discussion.

EXAMINATIONS/EVALUATIONS
Examinations:
The MD quizzes and final exam will be composed of multiple choice,
matching, short answer and/or essay type questions. Projected slides and/or
printed photographs may be a part of the test and quiz.
