Summer Holiday Work Placement for the 4th year Students of the Faculty of Medicine, Medical
Program, at the Ludwik Rydygier Collegium Medicum in Bydgoszcz, Nicolaus Copernicus University
in ToruĊ„
After the fourth year of studies, the Students are obliged to complete the two-week work placement
in Surgical Clinic or on Surgical Hospital Ward and two-week work placement in Emergency Medicine
Clinic or on Emergency Medicine Hospital Ward or in the Hospital Admission Room.
Heads of the abovementioned units, or Supervisors designated by them, shall establish a detailed
scope of duties and the schedule of the summer holiday work placement.
As far as possible, a Student, attended by the Supervisor, should perform all medical duties.
Number of working hours per day – 7. During the two-week work placement within surgery and
emergency medical care the Student is obliged to be on duty twice, from 3 p.m. to 9 p.m., and during
the duty to assist the physician on duty in every medical activity.
Any absence during the summer holiday work placement must be made up by the Student.
Completion of each part of the work placement program is confirmed by a signature of the
Supervisor, while accomplishment of the whole work placement is endorsed by a signature of the
Head of the unit where the work placement took place.

1. Organization of the surgical clinic/surgical hospital ward (admission room,
operating suite, surgical dressing room), principles of admissions, of keeping
the records and of the discharge of patient.
2. Types of surgical instruments and equipment applied in surgical clinic/ on
surgical hospital ward.
3. Participation (assisting) in surgical procedures in the operating suite.
4. Mastering the skills of physical examination and diagnostic investigation,
particularly in emergency cases.
5. Principles of dressing wounds, stitching, dealing with fractures and burns.
6. Principles and methods of local anesthesia.
7. Participation in the doctor’s round and in morning reports of the physician
on duty.
8. Active participation in operation of clinic/ward, supervised performance of
basic treatment, change of dressings, removing stitches, administering drip
infusions, collecting samples for diagnostic investigation.
9. Principles of aseptic and antiseptic surgery and surgical hand washing
technique.
