Donna,
I have attached a list of assessments that are commonly used in upper grades. One that I think you
will find to be well respected, valid and reliable is the GRADE (See the chart). The nice thing about
the GRADE is that it is very comprehensive, allows one to pick and choose which subtests to
administer, and can be used not only for diagnostic purposes, but also for progress monitoring and
outcome. I am not comfortable recommending a curriculum since Elissa knows more about that. I am
sure that there are some that have been reviewed by the Center on the website that you would find
appropriate. Are you looking for an intervention program or a core reading curriculum? Another
resource here at the Center is Debby Houston who knows a lot about secondary reading. You might
want to email her at dhouston@fcrr.org.
I hope this helps,
Randee

Subject: 4th-5th grade diagnosis and intervention
Randee,
Elissa Arndt said that you might be able to answer this question: In your state, what would you recommend to a principal who
asked for a good diagnostic and then intervention tool for 4-5th? I was on your website reading reports about programs and I could
not find one I wanted. I called and Elissa gave me lots of info. She said you might be able to answer this particular question.
Thanks for your help.
And thank you for such an easy to access website. I absolutely love it!
