Connolly Hospital The Radiology Dept provides comprehensive, high quality imaging
services and image guided procedures in a safe and efficient manner. It provides a 24
hour, seven day a week service
The hospital is an acute teaching hospital based in west Dublin with an A&E attendance of
approximately 33,000 attendances each year. In addition there are a number of surgical
specialties on site. The hospital provides for adult services only.
The department has a Siemens 64 slice CT, Ultrasound, one interventional room and 4
general exam rooms 2 of which are digital.

The radiology department staff complement includes Consultant Radiologists,
Radiography Services Manager, Clinical Specialist Radiographers, Senior Radiographers,
Basic Grade Radiographers, Nursing, Clerical Admin and Healthcare Assistants.

Purpose of the Post
Reporting to Radiography Services Manager or other designated supervisor.
Principal Duties and
Responsibilities
Carry out duties appropriate to a Radiographer in relation to Magnetic Resonance Imaging
and other areas within the Diagnostic Imaging Department, including the provision of an

Clinical Operations
The Radiographer Clinical Specialist will:
 Undertake, as team leader, primary responsibility on a day-to-day basis for the
Magnetic Resonance Imaging service and the effective utilisation of all resources
allocated
 Be accountable for the quality of the service provided, including customer service and
technical aspects
 Contribute to the development and implementation of operational policies, protocols
and guidelines to ensure optimum utilisation of resources and systematic audit of such
usage
 Advise as required on equipment selection, purchase, replacement or upgrading.
 Contribute to the preparation of plans for the service – monitor and report on their
implementation. Implement and maintain accurate information systems for clinical data
in accordance with hospital standards
 Maintain accurate records of equipment service, maintenance, malfunction, downtime
and performance as required and co-ordinate preventative maintenance schedules in
accordance with clinical demand and Department policy
 Maintain up to date knowledge of clinical, technical and radiographic developments in
relation to Magnetic Resonance Imaging and promote awareness of new
developments. Ensure that best practices are implemented and maintained
 Regularly liaise with the physicist on safety issues and other operational issues as
appropriate
 Maintain up to date knowledge of Radiographic developments in relation to other
imaging modalities
 Report all operation issues to Radiography Services Manager.
Finance
The Radiographer Clinical Specialist will:
 Contribute to financial planning and ensure that appropriate budgetary control
procedures are implemented
 Ensure that data on pay and non-pay expenditure is available as required in
accordance with Departmental policy
 Manage use of consumables efficiently
 Liaise with Radiography Services Manager on all financial matters.
Human Resources
The Radiographer Clinical Specialist will:
 Participate as required in human resource planning, recruitment and selection of staff
 Support the Radiographic Service Manager in the implementation of initiatives aimed at
on-going service development and improvement
 Promote and maintain a safe environment for staff and patients
 Assist in the development and implementation of risk management and health and
safety strategies in association with appropriate personnel
 Develop and maintain a training function as may be required in relation to qualified staff
and/or trainees and students
 Supervise and assess all training as required
 Liaise with the Radiographic Service Manager and other senior staff on the rotation of
staff through the Department to ensure and adequate number of trained staff are
available
 Liaise with the Radiographic Service Manager on human resource issues as
appropriate.

Health & Safety
The Radiographer Clinical Specialist will:
 Investigate and take appropriate action in accordance with hospital policy in relation to
complaints, accidents and incidents
 Ensure that all hospital policies and relevant legislation on radiation safety and
Magnetic Resonance Imaging safety is understood by staff and complied with
 Ensure the Magnetic Resonance Imaging unit operates in accordance with the
operational policy at all times
 Ensure that all safety questionnaires are completed and filed as per Department policy
 Liaise with the Radiographic Services Manager on all quality assures issues related to
the Magnetic Resonance Imaging department
 Ensure all hospital policies on infection control, health and safety etc. are understood
by staff and complied with
 Implement and maintain a quality assurance programme for the Department
 Have a working knowledge of HIQA Standards as they apply to the role for example,
Standards for Healthcare, National Standards for the Prevention and Control of
Healthcare Associated Infections, Hygiene standards etc.

Eligibility Criteria
Candidates must:
Qualifications and/ or
experience
a) On the latest date for receipt of applications for this post
:
i.
Posses the Diploma from the College of Radiographers;
or
ii.
Possess a B.Sc. in Radiography at level 8 (NFQ);
iii.
Possess a qualification at least equivalent to (i) or (ii) above as validated
by the competent authority;
or
and
b) Have not less that 6 years fulltime post qualification clinical experience;
and
c) Possess a recognised postgraduate course (NFQ Level 9) as recognised by the
IIRRT and have no less that 4 years practical clinical experience working in the
speciality. Practical clinical experience will include time assigned to work in the
relevant specialist area but needs to comply with the following breakdown:

Pre commencement of a postgraduate course (maximum of 1 year*
allowed);

Time spent completing the post graduate course (maximum of 1 year**
allowed);

A minimum of 2 years experience* following completion of a postgraduate
course.
*A minimum of 12 weeks assigned to work in the relevant specialised area will be
required for each relevant year to be counted.
**The research component of a postgraduate programme will count towards the
post course time once the Radiographer has successfully completed the taught

components of the programme.

d) Possess the requisite knowledge and ability (including a high standard of suitability
and management ability) for the proper discharge of the duties of the office

Terms and Conditions of Employment
Tenure
The current vacancy available is permanent and whole time.
The post is pensionable. A panel will be created from which permanent
and specified purpose vacancies of full or part time duration will be
filled. The tenure of these posts will be indicated at “expression of
interest” stage.
Appointment as an employee of the Health Service Executive is
governed by the Health Act 2004 and the Public Service Management
(Recruitment and Appointment) Act 2004.
Remuneration
The Salary scale for the post is:
€49,591 - €52,162 - €54,345 - €56,530 - €58,758
Working Week
The standard working week applying to the post is to be outlined at
job offer stage.
Annual Leave
HSE Circular 003-2009 “Matching Working Patterns to Service
Needs (Extended Working Day / Week Arrangements); Framework
for Implementation of Clause 30.4 of Towards 2016” applies. Under
the terms of this circular, all new entrants and staff appointed to
promotional posts from Dec 16th 2008 will be required to work
agreed roster / on call arrangements as advised by their line
manager. Contracted hours of work are liable to change between
the hours of 8am-8pm over seven days to meet the requirements for
extended day services in accordance with the terms of the
Framework Agreement (Implementation of Clause 30.4 of Towards
2016).
The Annual Leave applying to the post is to be outlined at job offer
stage and as determined by the Organisation of Working Time Act
1997.
Superannuation
Membership of the HSE Employee Superannuation Scheme applies
to this appointment.
Existing Members who transferred to the HSE on 1st January 2005
pursuant to Section 60 of the Health Act 2004 are entitled to
superannuation benefit terms under the HSE Scheme which are no
less favourable to those to which they were entitled at 31st
December 2004.
Appointees to posts in the Mental Health Services which formerly
attracted fast accrual of service should note that the terms of
Section 65 of the Mental Treatment Act 1945 do not apply to New
Entrant Public Servants as defined by Section 12 of the Public
Service Superannuation (Miscellaneous Provisions) Act 2004.
Probation
Every appointment of a person who is not already a permanent officer
of the Health Service Executive or of a Local Authority shall be subject
to a probationary period of 12 months as stipulated in the Department
of Health Circular No.10/71.

As this post is one of those designated under the Protection of
Persons Reporting Child Abuse Act 1998, appointment to this post
appoints one as a designated officer in accordance with Section 2 of
the Act. You will remain a designated officer for the duration of your
appointment to your current post or for the duration of your
appointment to such other post as is included in the categories
specified in the Ministerial Direction. You will receive full information
