Job Title: Department: Based in: Reports to: Radiographer Radiology Dar es Salaam Chief Radiographer Job Purpose Summary: The Radiographer shall be responsible for the justification and performance of radiographic examinations; supervision, guidance, support to junior members of staff and to contribute to their education and training. Also working effectively as a member of a multidisciplinary team; providing direct care and an optimum diagnostic service in order to assist in the management of patients within the directorate of radiology. Moreover maintaining high levels of professional and radiographic standards and be able to work in any of the departments associated with the directorate including weekends, nights and on calls for the hospital in general. Job Responsibilities and Accountabilities: Performs clinical work using specialized imaging equipment, rotating through a number of areas within the Department. Rotation will include some or all of the areas listed. The CT Department, MRI Department, General Radiology Department (Including Theatre and Mobile work) and Bone Density (DEXA) scanning. Participates in the Departmental cross-training programme to become proficient in other specialist modalities as required. Provides training for staff and students within own area(s) of expertise. Contribute to the supervision of clinical work and activities within assigned areas, to ensure the maintenance of highest professional standards. Maintain clear lines of communication between all clinical and non-clinical staff to ensure the delivery of a quality imaging service. Responsible for reporting of equipment faults in accordance with Departmental guidelines. Ensure compliance with relevant statutory requirements and Trust policies and procedures. Assist with the development and maintenance of Departmental policies and procedures and systems of work. Participate in clinical audit programmes. Ensure practice is evidence based, shared, and, wherever possible, patient focused. Carry out duties in accordance with statutory regulations including the “Code of Professional Conduct for Radiographers” and “Health Professional Council” regulations. Demonstrate continuing professional development including attending courses and participation in Hospital/Departmental training programmes in agreement with the head of department. Participate in the Hospital Performance Management Programme including production of Personal Work Plan, establishing training needs and developing the Company’s core behavioral Competencies. Participate in the education and development of Radiographers, students and other staff groups as required. Act independently in the assessment of referrals for X-Ray examinations, taking full responsibility for the justification of general X-Ray examinations in order to reduce unnecessary ionizing radiation exposure of patients in accordance with IR(ME)R 2000. Maintain a high level of expertise in the safe operation of all X-Ray and ultrasound equipment and manage faults effectively. Ensuring all equipment is kept clean and in good working order. Reporting all faults of hazards promptly. All imaging equipment requires a great deal of accuracy and precision. It is to be used under strict operator and manufactures guidelines. Equipments used include: static x ray tables, erect bucky assemblies, fluoroscopy equipments, mobile x-ray units, ceiling suspended x ray tubes, CR readers, dry laser printers, Mammography machine etc. Carry out Quality Assurance tests in compliance with statutory and manufactures guidelines. Diagnostic quality of images produced. Prioritize own workload and that of junior radiographers. Evaluate radiograph and undertake additional radiological views if clinically indicated. Be accountable for own professional actions. Works within Codes of Practice, occupational standards and Policies and Procedures. Asses the condition of the patient and decide on appropriate techniques to obtain the radiograph required. Participates in the allocation of duties, supervision and training of clinical staff. Contributes to Departmental policy and procedural changes. Uses clinical judgment and experience to ensure optimum imaging standards and patient care for individual cases. Uses clinical experience and knowledge to justify General Radiological examinations in accordance with the Ionizing Radiation Regulations. Work as part of a team to ensure effective communication and delivery of care. Prioritize workload depending on the severity of a patient condition and the direct impact on their management and organize Radiographer cover appropriately Liaise with fellow healthcare workers and referring clinicians to provide a high quality imaging service to patients. Maintain accurate patient records by input of accurate information to reflect the service provided and meet professional standards. Work independently when providing a stand/by and on call service to patients requiring urgent imaging due to acute trauma or illness. Undertake IV cannulation for patients requiring the injection of contrast media following the required training and assessment of competence. Undertake radiographic procedures in the dedicated X-Ray room in the Accident and Emergency department working as part of the team particularly overnight and weekends. Ensure patient records and confidentiality are maintained in accordance with Hospital policies and statutory regulations including the Data Protection Act. Ensure that Departmental records are maintained for all patients and that all statistical information, equipment information and staff training information relating to the department are documented appropriately. Knowledge and skills requirements Must be a qualified Radiographer, i.e., DCR or BSc. Must be registered with the Medical Radiology & Imaging Professionals Council. Experience in one or more specialized modality is desirable. Strong Interpersonal skills, Communication skills, Presentation skills and Negotiation skills. Strong project management, problem-solving and critical thinking skills. Must demonstrate strategic thinking and proven ability to lead initiatives through implementation and monitoring phases. Cope with the mental and physical demands of working in acute areas, independently, sometimes having to provide images on severely injured, abusive or violent patients. Ensure personal safety and that of the patient during lifting and handling procedures. Frequent requirement for prolonged concentration and accuracy while operating Imaging equipment. Occasional exposure to unpleasant working conditions during clinical duties, can come in contact with blood, body fluids, unpleasant smells and unclean patients. Occasional exposure to highly distressing circumstances such as an unexpected deterioration of a patient’s condition or a patient/relative complaint. Frequent light lifting and occasional moderate lifting during clinical duties such as carrying cassettes (4kg), QA phantoms/MRI Coils (5-15kg) and assisting patients on and off the table. Frequent long periods of standing while wearing heavy protective clothing. Directly supervise and train rotational staff and student radiographers while maintaining a high throughput of patient’s high standards of works. Manual handling and Basic Life Support training is mandatory. Ensuring patient cooperation by overcoming fears and lack of knowledge within limited time frames. Using empathy and persuasion to achieve a positive experience for the patient and optimum imaging standards. Cross-training in a variety of different specialist modalities using different types of equipment. Participating in the training and supervision of staff who may not necessarily be at a lower grade but are less experienced in a particular specialty.
