Life in First Grade
Reading- In first grade, we use a balanced reading program. We use a combination of literature,
leveled reading materials, and our reading series. Students will learn a variety of strategies to
assist them in reading.
Spelling- The spelling program consists of the TEKS (Texas Essential Knowledge Skills) in
spelling, “Words Their Way” (WTW), and high frequency words. WTW is based on research of
how students naturally acquire spelling and word work patterns. It is then presented in a
systematic approach that overlaps, so that gaps and holes in a student’s learning will not be
overlooked. WTW provides our students with a hands-on method to gain knowledge of how and
why words work together, thus providing transfer to other words. Students will be held
responsible for the “Fry’s 100 instant words” (attached) in writing. These words will be
introduced throughout the year.
Writing -We will be using the “Writer Workshop” program with the students on a daily basis in
first grade. We will incorporate “Thinking Maps” with the writing process. We will also write in
our journals. Writing journals help to reinforce skills such as grammar, handwriting, and spelling
that we are learning daily.
Handwriting- We use the Handwriting Without Tears program to teach students proper
letter/print formation. Handwriting Without Tears® aims to make legible and fluent
handwriting an easy and automatic skill that students can master with lessons lasting only 15
minutes per day.
Math- Our math curriculum takes an activity centered approach. Students will be using
manipulatives to visually see and touch mathematics to develop number concepts. We use a math
program called Investigations. These experiences help to bridge the concrete and the abstract
by applying critical thinking skills. Through the development of mathematical concepts and
reasoning, every student will be prepared to communicate effectively using the language of
mathematics.
Science- Science is taught through an inquiry approach with the use of FOSS kits (Full Option
Science System). This science curriculum is used throughout the district, so it is sequential
from grade to grade. First grade will experience science through a hands-on approach.
Social Studies- First grade’s primary focus in social studies is on community. We also focus on
citizenship, multicultural topics, historical figures, wants and needs, goods and services, maps
and more! We will also be doing a service learning project.
Assessments- Students will receive a printed report card every nine weeks. The report card is
standards based. Literacy and math assessments will be given throughout the year. All of the
beginning of the year assessments will be discussed at our parent teacher conference in
October.
Homework- In first grade, we expect our students to be reading at home approximately 20
minutes every night. We will have a few homework projects throughout the year, but we do not
have additional homework on a regular basis.
Communication- The red Lakeside folder is our main form of communication in first grade. This
folder will be sent home every day with important information from the office, PTO, your child
and me. Please check it daily and make sure it is back in your child’s backpack the next day.
I will also be emailing you the First Grade Gazette Newsletter every Friday. The newsletter has
important weekly information about what we’ve been doing in class as well as information about
upcoming events.
For a more detailed account of everything your child will be learning in first grade, log onto the
TEA website at tea.state.tx.us/teks/ and scroll down to the first grade TEKS.
