We are seeking to appoint an experienced and enthusiastic teacher to join our current school
support team, based at The Curriculum Centre in Newbury. The role will involve supporting
Ethnic Minority pupils with English as an additional language in West Berkshire secondary and
primary schools. We would like to hear from you if you have a minimum of 12 months
experience working with ethnic minority pupils in a school environment. A willingness to learn,
genuine commitment to social inclusion and the ability to use your initiative so that you make a
valuable contribution to the school support team is as important as experience and
qualifications. An appropriate allowance will be paid for travel.
Specific responsibilities will include:

To provide assessments for pupils with EAL.

To provide advice for schools to support the teaching of pupils with EAL

To teach pupils in early stages of acquiring English, and, as appropriate,
at more later stages

To participate in data collecting, monitoring, tracking and analysis of achievement
of pupils from Ethnic Minorities , including those with EAL

To work with teachers, school and other staff/agencies in supporting the raising
of attainment for pupils from Ethnic Minorities

To work with and advise Teaching Assistants working with pupils with EAL

Involvement in the delivery of training to schools and staff

JOB PURPOSE


To enhance the achievement of Ethnic Minority pupils and pupils who have English as an
Additional Language, ensuring race equality and promoting cultural diversity in West
Berkshire schools
To provide support and advice in the teaching of English as an Additional Language and in
supporting other Minority Ethnic pupils
DESIGNATION OF POST AND POSITION WITHIN DEPARTMENTAL STRUCTURE



Ethnic Minority Achievement consultant employed by West Berkshire LA to work alongside
National Strategy Consultants at The Curriculum Centre
Report to West Berkshire School Improvement Team on services provided for West
Berkshire schools and pupils.
Line managed by the Ethnic Minority Achievement Team Manager, including pupils who
have English as an Additional Language
MAIN DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES






To deal with enquiries from schools for pupils with EAL
To provide assessments for pupils with EAL.
To provide advice for schools to support the teaching of pupils with EAL
To teach pupils in early stages of acquiring English, and, as appropriate, at more later
stage
To participate in data collecting, monitoring, tracking and analysis of achievement of pupils
from Ethnic Minorities , including those with EAL
To work with teachers and to involve parents, carers and other staff/agencies in supporting
the acquisition of English for pupils with EAL.










To work with teachers, school and other staff/agencies in supporting the raising of
attainment for pupils from Ethnic Minorities
To support the maintenance of a website to provide up to date information and resources on
matters relating to Ethnic Minority pupils and pupils with EAL
To work with and advise Teaching Assistants working with pupils with EAL
Develop and produce resources to support pupils’ learning and as exemplars for schools
Involvement in the delivery of training to schools and staff
To write reports and maintain up to date records
To maintain an up to date knowledge of latest research and developments in the field of
EAL and ethnic minority achievement
Participate in training and personal development, including attendance at National Strategy
EMA meetings where appropriate
To help complete West Berkshire action plans for DCSF.
Any other duties from time to time the Corporate Director (or Directors) may see as
appropriate
