Information from the OCDSB
Director's Update
Take a few minutes to read the latest posting by Dr. Jennifer Adams, Director of Education. Dr. Adams
shares some important thoughts about mathematics - a topic of much discussion in education these days.
Strategic Planning 2015-2019
A key priority of the Board of Trustees this year is the development of a strategic plan which will guide the
school district for the next four years. An important part of this process is the assessment of progress on
the current 4 year plan. You can read more about our progress and the work that we've accomplished
under our current plan in the 2013-2014 Director's Report to the Community. The Board and senior staff
will use this information, along with the community feedback obtained through
the EverySchool_EveryVoice consultation, and an environmental scan to inform their discussions. Watch
here for regular updates!
Secondary School Course Guide
The 2014-2015 Secondary School Course Guide has been posted. Secondary parents should consider
scheduling some time with their children to review the guide and consider course options and program
planning for next year.
Special Education
We are very fortunate at the OCDSB to be able to offer a broad range of special education supports and
resources to students. The district uses a tiered approach to assessment and intervention
which sequentially increases the intensity of instructional intervention for a student requiring special
education programs and services. The range of programs and services includes:
Regular class with specialized support
Regular class with learning support teacher or learning resource teacher monitoring
Regular class with learning support teacher or learning resource teacher support
Specialized program class
Special education school
Every year, the district reviews the criteria for specialized program classes to ensure that the criteria are
consistent with professional standards of practice. This year, the revisions were more extensive as there
were a number of professional standards which changed and an effort was made to bring consistency to
criteria and application process for all exceptionalities.
This issue was discussed at SEAC last month and will be discussed at Committee of the Whole on
February 17, 2014. Many parents have asked questions about whether the programs are changing.
There are no program changes proposed. The staff report includes an overview of this issue, explains
the revisions to the criteria sheets and has some frequently asked questions.

Online resources for parents - from the Council of Ontario Directors of
Education (CODE)
Looking for resources to help you help your kids? CODE has produced five booklets
with wonderful information and resources for parents. The three tool kits and two
resource guides were created with input from parents across Ontario. Parents,
guardian, school staff and administrators will find these full of resources to help parent
kids and to help support parent engagement. Take a look here.
Grade 8 Parent Information Nights
Grade 8 Parent Information Nights are being held at OCDSB High Schools
throughout the district in the coming month. You can find a detailed list of dates
and time on the OCDSB website. Open houses offer students and their families
an opportunity to learn more about the unique and interesting programs, after
school activities, arts, music, sports and much more available in our high
schools. Attending the open house is a great way to learn more about secondary
school and the pathways and programs available for your child.
Concussion Management
The district has been working on a new policy and procedure on concussion management. This
work began last year and in the course of our work, the Ministry released requirements for all
school boards to develop policies in this area. You can review the policy and the procedure on
our website. The policy will be considered by Committee of the Whole on January 20th. This is
an important issue for families and I encourage you to learn more
EQAO Parent Forum - March 7th
The Education Quality and Accountability Office (EQAO) is pleased to invite parents and
educators to a parent forum in Ottawa on March 7. The forum is composed of two sessions.
During the first, the School Support and Outreach Team will deliver information about EQAO's
province-wide assessment program. The following topics will be covered during the session: an
overview of EQAO elementary and secondary assessments, the process for developing and
scoring the assessments and an explanation about how the results from these assessments
contribute to student learning in Ontario's schools.
Guest speaker - educator and author Dr. Lynda Colgan - will discuss the differences that
parents can make in their child's mathematics education. Using research and concrete
examples throughout her session, Lynda will equip parents with effective strategies and
resources to use as they carry out their important job as members of the math teaching team.
