I hope everyone enjoyed the long weekend! Many parents were in the school for
interviews on Thursday and Friday to discuss their child’s progress. As always, parents
are encouraged to contact their child’s teacher if they have any questions or concerns
about their child’s progress. Teachers remain committed to ongoing communication with
individual parents/guardians regarding student progress and development. A reminder
that the progress report coming home on Dec10th reflects assessment completed from
Sept 8th to Oct 30th . The next report card will come home at the beginning of February.
An important part of well-being is managing our physical health. As
parents, we are important role models to our kids in terms of staying physically active.
Next week, the district will be hosting a Speaker Series on Physical Literacy with Dr.
Rebecca Lloyd - November 26th 7:00 p.m. in the Auditorium at Longfields-Davidson
Heights Secondary School, 149 Berrigan Drive.
Physical Literacy is more than just fitness and activity; it encourages a complete
understanding of the way our bodies move, function and contribute to social, physical
and emotional well-being. Dr. Lloyd provides a dynamic presentation on physical
literacy and How we need to rethink physical education. Hear practical examples of how
we may become more physically literate in our own lives as students, teachers, and
parents. This is a free presentation for parents. We hope to see you there.
French Instruction in Kindergarten and Early
French Immersion
The final report on French instruction in kindergarten and Early French Immersion
was discussed by Committee of the Whole on November 17th. We heard from many
parents at the meeting who felt that more time was needed for school councils, parents
and staff to be aware of the recommendations and to have the opportunity to discuss
the recommendations, consider the research on this topic and to provide feedback to
the Board. The Committee passed a motion recommending the district undertake
additional consultation on this topic and delay the implementation of any changes until
September 2017. This recommendation will go to the Board on November 24th for
approval. Once approved, additional consultation strategies will be developed. More
information and updates will be provided here.
Labour Relations - Local Agreement
reached with ETFO
We pleased to announce that a tentative local agreement has been reached with the
Elementary Teachers' Federation of Ontario and its Ottawa Teacher Local representing
elementary school teachers. This agreement, reached Thursday afternoon, comes less
than a week after the ratification of the central agreement between ETFO, OPSBA and
the Crown. The terms of the agreement will remain confidential until ratified by both
parties. Ratification is scheduled to be completed by or before December 7, 2015.
Elementary and secondary educational support workers represented by the Ontario
Secondary School Teachers Federation (OSSTF) are still engaged in legal strike action
and those sanctions continue. We will continue to provide updates through the Labour
Relations section of our website.
Ottawa Public Health Immunization
Ottawa Public Health (OPH) is reviewing the immunization records of 150,000 students
attending elementary and secondary schools in Ottawa to make sure the information is
up-to-date. Updates on immunizations are crucial information to protect the health of
students during an infectious disease outbreak, such as measles. Under the
Immunization of School Pupils Act (ISPA), students attending school in Ontario are
required to be vaccinated against nine diseases or have a valid exemption.
In the months ahead, OPH will be sending letters to parents if their child's records
are not up-to-date. I have been notified that up to 360 students at Broadview may
receive this first notification letters.
A suspension from school may be issued if a student's record remains incomplete. A
suspension from school may be issued if a student's record remains incomplete. Written
notices from Ottawa Public Health for students are now being mailed to parents.
To avoid school suspensions, parents who receive a letter requesting immunization
information can contact OPH by phone at 613-580-6744 or submit immunization
information online, by fax, by mail or by the ImmunizeCA app. Parents can
visit parentinginottawa.ca/immunization for more details about how to submit their
child's immunization information to Ottawa Public Health. Suspension letters for OCDSB
students will be sent home starting in January 2016
More information is attached.
