STUDENT LEARNING OUTCOMES
Upon successful completion of the course, students will be able to:
1. Construct and translate medical terms by combining root words, prefixes and
suffixes.
2. Identify basic medical terms within the context of anatomy and physiology of
Body systems.
3. Conceptualize and explain how systems interact and regulate body functions
including the following: analysis of medical terms related to the endocrine glands
and their hormones, classification of tumors and treatment, role of radioactivity in
diagnosis and treatment, drug classifications and actions on the body, recognizing
and interpreting terms associated with diagnosis and treatment of psychiatric
disorders.
4. Associate terms related to clinical procedures and laboratory tests in relation to
medical pathology, diagnosis, and treatment.
5. Communicate effectively and accurately in the medical field using a functional
level of medical terminology
6. Demonstrate knowledge of the 911 zone Emergency Preparedness information for
Canada College. Review the POSTER boards in MEDA 110, MEDA 111 day
and 110 night classes for safety promotion. Sign up on line for receiving Canada
College systems Emergency Texting (in case of emergencies on campus). Keep
personal contact information current.

The Language of Medicine 8th Edition (7th edition acceptable).

REQUIRED LEARNING AIDS AND REFERENCE MATERIALS

A CD is provided with each new text. This CD has a tutorial that will be
extremely helpful as a study buddy. Computers dedicated to run this CD program
are available in the Learning Center Bldg #9. (preloaded)

A Medical Dictionary and FLASH CARDS are required as a study tool for each
chapter. A quick and helpful Power point Pod Cast review of MEDA 110
Chapters 1-11 are available to support and enhance student learning outcomes.
These Pod Cast may be accessed at www.smccd.edu/accounts/hartfordd. Viewing these Pod
Cast will allow students in MEDA 110 to follow the class schedule and have early access to
lectures. Additionally, MEDA 111 will have a tool for review and reference.

You are encouraged to complete homework and to study in small groups
OFFICE HOURS
Instructor will be available days from 08:45-9:00 am and 12:15-2:00pm on Tuesdays and
12:15-1:00pm Thursdays (before and after class). Night schedule: 5:45pm-6:00pm and
9:00pm-9:30pm. Students that would like extra help, please see me in classroom 216
building 13 or office 209A on the 2nd floor during day hours and classroom 113 bldg 13
nights.
ATTENDANCE
In addition to completion of course work, regular, punctual attendance is required in
order to receive a passing grade. Attendance is mandatory.
You are allowed four absences. FOUR LATES EQUAL ONE ABSENCE
On the fifth absence you will automatically be dropped from the course if it occurs
before the last day to drop (which is April 29th 2010), and an automatic “F”, if it occurs
after the last day to drop.
Roll may be taken at any time during class. If you are not present at that time, you
will be marked absent for the day.
DISRUPTIVE BEHAVIOR POLICY:
If disruptive behavior occurs, you will receive a warning. On the second occurrence you
will be asked to leave class and may not return until making an appointment with the VP
of student services. On the third occurrence the VP of student services will be notified
and you will be dropped from the class. While not a complete list, the following are
examples of disruptive behavior:
 Not following written or verbal directions
 Having cell phones or pagers on audible mode, or texting
 Interrupting lectures by talking
 Plagiarizing or cheating
CHAPTER QUIZZES AND ASSIGNMENTS
Chapter quizzes will be administered in class (generally on Tuesdays), Thursdays for
night classes. Additionally, take-home assignments will be given from the text book.
These written assignments will be reviewed by the students in class. Homework
assignments will count toward students’ class participation grade. Students are expected
to complete chapter exercises and assignments and be prepared for class discussions.

class participation grade. Keeping up with the chapter assignments is essential to
enhance learning.
CHAPTER EXAMS
Tests will be administered in class (generally on Thursdays) and will consist of multiplechoice, fill-in-the-blank, and matching questions. Midterm and final exams will be
cumulative and will consist of multiple-choice questions only. The lowest exam grade
received will be thrown out (with the exception of the midterm and final).
Quizzes will include answer sheets and will be provided by the instructor.
Scantrons are required for all chapter exams. Students are responsible for bringing
their own scantrons.
GRADING POLICY
At the end of the semester, students’ quiz grades will be averaged together to count
toward a final grade in the course. If the average of all quiz grades is 90% or above,
students will be given an additional 2 point increase in their final grade. If the average of
all quiz grades is 80% or above, students will be given 1 additional point toward their
final grade. Quiz grades averaging below 80% will not receive any additional points.
Please note: Upon completion of exams, students must maintain a grade average of
“C” or better in order to pass the course.
