Dear Professor Steven Hardy,
I hereby raise my interest for the nine month appointment of visiting Hyde Chair of Excellence position.
Background
My past work and passionate interest lies within translation of the architectural design process to
execution in a sustainable built environment. By engaging in the use of advanced computation we can
connect the architectural design to the physical result by shorthand.
The embedded properties of timber with its strength, plasticity and it being the most abundant
sustainable resource as building material, enables the architect not only to free architecture as form
and spatiality but also to do this in a industrialized mass customized context and sustainable manner.
Further, as the vast possibilities to extract composites from timber, cellulose and residues, this today
acts as an unexplored area of future usage within the building industry. Timber and procurement of
refined timber products can constitute the core of both structural framing and building fabric and will
enable us to not only renew our building stock but also seek higher experiences in architectural form
and detailing.
By being a central part of an emerging industry the architect can obtain a leading role in a future
sustainable built environment. It is my belief that a collage of architecture such as the UNL would both
benefit and blossom by standing in the forefront of this development.
Studio and seminar proposal
The course and lecture series will focus on the direct correlation between the product of the architects
hand and the possibilities and responsibilities this carries into the physical end result.
The studio will make a series of excursions to sawmill and manufacturing plants where workshops will
be held on the factory floor. We will engage in the onsite control of CNC machinery through
understanding of its underlying scripting. We will further investigate the possibilities to streamline the
translation between digital model and digital fabrication, by GUI’s and debugging. Further the use of
parametric design tools will enable an optimization of the material use. Parallel to this the studio will
investigate the possibilities to reuse and reduce manufacturing residues.
The studio will aim to produce a series of structural prototypes, reports regarding a sustainable
material and building process along with a library of computational tools which can be drawn from for
further investigation.
Sincerely yours/
Daniel Fagerberg

Key Data
Daniel began his training in Newcastle, Australia where he received his first degree (Hons.), and then
completed his studies 2002 at the Architectural Association in London, UK. Daniel has worked as a
subcontractor for larger architectural firms since 1998 where he accumulated the experience required
to develop his current practice in 2003. Daniel has focused on timber and above all solid wood
components, where he has developed an expertise with knowledge and contacts throughout the
complete production stage. Next to architecture, Daniel has been involved in a number of crossfertilization projects within IT and marketing, where social and infrastructure issues have informed the
development of innovative business concepts. Daniel has won and been nominated for several
awards including Kasper Salin (Campushallen 2000, AIX), and the Debut Prize 2007 with his ski resort
of solid wood in Ramundberget, north west Sweden. He has also worked extensively in film, video and
web. Daniel has lectured and taught studios touching the zone between architecture, technology and
new media at KTH School of Architecture, Architectural Association, UK, Fiuni School of Architecture
in Stavanger, Norway and London Metropolitan University, UK.
Daniel Fagerberg focuses on sustainable building and architecture with a special interest in solid
timber and efficient industrial production and mass customization. In contrary to the traditional position
of Scandinavian architectural services, Daniel strives to engage in the full building process, which has
led to a series of new ventures within engineering, software development and property development.
To meet the requirements from himself and later the timber industry to make use of parametric design
tools and BIM he found a new market in the translation of CAD environment into CAM and the
production of building components. In 2003 Daniel therefore began exploring software development
for the building industry (mainly timber industry) through which he in 2010 formed the company Paqam
(pack-to-cam). This resulted in further demand for product development and services, and in 2010 he
set up Strombro Building Workshop (engineering). Strombro currently employs four full time staff and
two half time consultants. This has resulted in taking pole position as a specialized consultancy firm in
the emerging industrialization of timber building in Scandinavia. Daniel Fagerberg’s current work
spans from research in timber building technology, design, planning and procurement through hotel
and residential projects to town planning, feasibility studies and project management. Daniel frequently
lectures at fairs, seminars and councils in Sweden, Norway and the UK, in the interest of promoting
timber and the industrialization thereof as a sustainable building material.
