Charles Schulz American Cartoonist Try not to have a good time... this is supposed to be educational. Meant to be a cartoonist? • As child, his uncle nicknamed him, Sparky, after a cartoon character, “Spark plug” “The only thing I ever wanted to be was a cartoonist. That’s my life. Drawing” • Lived 1922 – 2000 • Served in WW II • Interested in Art as a teenager • Studied through the Art Instruction Schools • He started cartooning in St. Paul Minn. For the local paper SPIKE-the amazing hunting dog • He sent a letter to RIPLEY’S Believe it or Not about his dog Spike, and was thrilled when his drawing was published in 1936 Peanuts • He created “Li’l Folks” for his local newspaper • He sought to SYNDICATE • Name changed to PEANUTS for legal reasons July 27, 1947 • Peanuts was published daily in 2,600 papers in 75 countries in 21 languages. • He drew over 18,000 comic strips • He made about $30 million a year from Syndication/Merchandising • His characters are well known, liked and easy to identify with Charlie Brown must be the one who suffers, because he’s a caricature of the average person. Most of us are much more acquainted with losing than winning. Winning is great, but it isn’t funny • Good ol’ Charlie Brown” is the lovable loser in the zig-zag tshirt—the kid who never gives up (even though he almost never wins). • He manages the world’s worst baseball team…yet shows up for every game. • He can’t muster the courage to talk to the Little Red-Haired girl…yet keeps hoping. • Even though he gets grief from his friends, his kite-eating tree, even his own dog, Charlie Brown remains the stalwart hero. Snoopy’s whole personality is a little bittersweet. But he’s a very strong character. He can win or lose, be a disaster, a hero, or anything, and yet it all works out. • • • • The wildly imaginative, supremely confident, worldfamous beagle is a canine master of disguise. As Joe Cool, he’s aloof, unflappable, above the fray, the hip dog we’d all like to be. As the World War I Flying Ace, he engages in aerial combat with the notorious Red Baron. While pondering life from the top of his doghouse, he writes the great American novel, travels to the moon, and plots revenge on the cat next door . Lucy comes from that part of me that’s capable of saying mean and sarcastic things, which is not a good trait to have, so Lucy gives me a good outlet. But each character has a weakness and Lucy’s weakness is Schroeder. • Known around the neighborhood (and by her little brother, Linus) for being crabby and bossy, • Lucy can often be found dispensing advice from her 5cent psychiatrist’s booth, yanking away Linus’ security blanket, or humiliating Charlie Brown. • Lucy’s only weakness? Her unrequited love for the pianoplaying Schroeder. Peppermint Patty, the tomboy, is forthright, doggedly loyal, with a devastating singleness of purpose, the part of us that goes through life with blinders on. •A fearless born leader and a natural athlete, Peppermint Patty is up to any challenge…except studying. •She never met a school day she didn’t hate. •But this tough girl has a soft side, too: She’s hopelessly in love with her pal Charlie “Chuck” Brown—who has no idea. •For Peppermint Patty, sports are easy; it’s life that’s hard. Linus, my serious side, is the house intellectual, bright, well-informed which, I suppose may contribute to his feelings of insecurity • The benevolent, blanketclutching philosopher always has a kind word for everybody…even his bossy older sister, Lucy. • While he’s often the voice of reason in the neighborhood, Linus also believes firmly in the Great Pumpkin, and he suffers more than most when people (or pumpkins) let him down. I kind of like Schroeder. He’s fairly down to earth, but he has his problems too. He has to play on the painted black piano keys, and he thinks Beethoven was the first President of the United States. • This mini musical genius is rarely separated from his toy piano or his idol, Beethoven—except when he’s calling a game as the reliable catcher on Charlie Brown’s baseball team. • The rest of his time is spent fending off unwanted advances from the bane of his existence: Lucy. Sally is the complete pragmatist. There is a certain charm when she fractures the language: ‘By golly, if any centimeters come in this room, I’ll step on them • • • • • CHARLIE BROWN’S LITTLE SISTER BELIEVES THE WORLD OWES HER AN EXPLANATION. WHY DOES SHE HAVE TO GO TO SCHOOL? WHY DOESN’T LINUS, HER SWEET BABBOO, LOVE HER? AND WHAT’S THE CAPITAL OF VENEZUELA? SALLY IS ALWAYS ON THE HUNT FOR ANSWERS—AND WHEN SHE DOESN’T GET THEM, SHE COMES UP WITH A WHOLE NEW PHILOSOPHY: “WHO CARES?” Marcie is one-up on Peppermint Patty in every way. She sees the truth of things, where it invariably escapes Patty. I like Marcie • • • PEPPERMINT PATTY’S BEST FRIEND, LOYAL FOLLOWER, AND COMPLETE OPPOSITE. MARCIE IS THE SMART ONE OF THE DUO—EVEN IF SHE DOESN’T KNOW THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN BASEBALL AND HOCKEY. SHE’S HORRIBLE AT SPORTS, BUT TERRIFIC AT FRIENDSHIP, ESPECIALLY WITH CHARLIE BROWN (WHOM SHE CALLS “CHARLES”) AND PEPPERMINT PATTY (WHOM SHE CALLS “SIR”). Franklin is thoughtful and can quote the Old Testament as effectively as Linus. In contrast with the other characters, Franklin has the fewest anxieties and obsessions. • CHARLIE BROWN’S QUIET FRIEND AND CONFIDANT, • FRANKLIN MIGHT BE THE ONLY ONE WHO NEVER HAS AN UNKIND WORD ABOUT OUR HAPLESS HERO. • AT SCHOOL, FRANKLIN SITS ONE SEAT AHEAD OF PEPPERMINT PATTY, WHICH MAKES HIS SCHOOL DAYS THAT MUCH MORE UNBEARABLE. What is the message of this show? • Love, caring, and the importance of showing consideration to others that clearly showed between these adorable children. • Charlie Brown, a boy so devoted, and determined to make Thanksgiving day a joyous day for his friends despite their socially awkward, and selfish behavior when inviting themselves to his house along with his family dilemma Where can I get PEANUTS everyday • There’s an APP by iverse! • YUP!!!! IT’s Frrrreeeeee!
