Characters Charlie – Charlie is 15 and has just started his life as a high schooler. He soon realizes he is a wallflower. Sam – Sam is 18 and is Patrick's step-sister. She is Charlie's main love interest. Patrick – Patrick is Sam's step-brother. Summary The book is about fifteen-year-old Charlie's adolescent journeys through his first year in high school. He is trying to deal with the suicide of his former best friend and decides to write to a stranger he had heard of that had a good reputation. Charlie's first friend is also his english teacher, Bill. He overcomes his shyness and decides to talk to his soon to be best friends, Sam and Patrick. Charlie starts to experiment with drugs and alchohol although he soon stops. Charlie's family has a dark secret about him which he finds out about at the end of the story.
