Rupestrian church of San Nicola dei Greci, Matera
The church of Saint Nicholas of the Greeks is part of
an early mediaeval monastic complex built above
the church of the Madonna delle Virtù, overlooking
the gorge and the nearby murge plateau. The
church has two naves, divided by a wall and each
ending with a presbytery. Traces of the iconostases
and liturgical spaces of the oriental rite can still be
seen on the walls. The wonderful frescoes covering
the walls of the church are an important example of
Byzantine painting, from between the twelfth and
thirteenth centuries.
