WARMUP:
1)
2)
3)
4)
Collect your notebook.
Open up to page 16 (this is flexible)
Title – Scientific Method
Top half of the page – draw a picture
of a world that has no science.
5) Think of what we have today that
required science to develop and
don’t include that in your picture.
Target Learning
Today I will create a comic strip
showing the steps of the scientific
method for my own original example.
Announcements:
1) October Sky
2) Turtle Leadership Committee
applications are due Thursday after
school.
About Science Fair
Freshman Team – two choices
Engineering a cool solar cooker
Engineering the perfect paper
airplane.
Junior Varsity Team
You have demonstrated you can use
the scientific method.
You have the right to choose a
project.
Must convince me it is the right
project for you.
Information on line.
Varsity Team
Demonstrated knowledge of the
scientific method
3.5 GPA
You may have an interstate science
fair project with our partner schools.
Never been done before – great
opportunity.
Scientific Method
A systematic way of studying the
world. A method that helps us learn
truth by following set steps.
Question
Question: The problem that needs to
be solved with a variable or with a
specific engineering goal.
Example –
Research
Information you obtain about the
problem from the internet, an expert,
hands on experiences, or other
resources.
Example:
Hypothesis
A guess of a solution to the problem
BASED on previous research.
Written as “I believe __________
because __________.”
Example:
Experiment
Activities that you do to test whether
your hypothesis is correct or not.
Includes:
1) Written, detailed procedure.
2) Includes graphs and tables.
Example:
Analysis
Critically thinking about your experiment.
Includes:
1) Explain what you learn from your data.
What story does it tell?
2) Describe problems you had with the
experiment. How could you solve those
problems?
3) Does the data support your hypothesis?
Explain.
Example:
Closed Box Mystery
What can we learn about the contents
of our sealed box?
Research
Examine the box. Don’t open up, but
write down information about your
observations.
Hypothesis
We believe insides the box is/are
______________ because
______________________________
______________________________
Experiment
Ask of Mr. Jamsa 1-3 questions, the
answer of which can only be “yes” or
“no” to try and verify your hypothesis.
Analysis
1) What does your data (the answer
to the questions) tell you about the
contents of the box?
2) Describe problems with your
experiment (if any) and how you could
solve them?
3) Did you solve the mystery? If not,
go back to the hypothesis step.
Your assignment
Make a six box comic strip.
Illustrate and write a comic which
demonstrates the steps of the
scientific method.
If you can make it funny, that is a
bonus.
Show as much depth as you can in a
comic strip.
Looking for a Twin
