There have been a number of designers
over the past 100 years who have had a
real impact on the world of fashion
retailing.
 Their designs and ideas were a real
influence on a generation of fashion
consumers.
 These names have continued to play a role
as each generation looks to the past for
inspiration.


The Early Twentieth Century
Chanel created many famous designs, she
freed women up from wearing corsets; she
‘created’ the little black dress, the Chanel
suit, the use of costume jewellery. See:
Coco Chanel
 Dior dominated fashion after WW2. He
was famous for creating the ‘New Look’.



The Swinging Sixties

The 1960s was a decade of change fashions
created then are still revived in different ways
for new generations. Fashion had previously been
aimed at at older consumers.
In the 60’s young people became more important.
London became a fashion city and some of the
young designers were set to become world famous.

 The Mini Skirt became a fashion icon.


Disco & Punk
As we moved out of the 60’s a very wide
range of styles hot the fashion scene.
 Hippies styles still loomed large with
Afghan coats & cheesecloth. However Glam
Rock, Disco & Punk was around the corner.

Westwood
 Lycra was a favourite fabric at this time !
However worse was yet to come in the 80’s.


Shoulder Pads,Stone Wash & Ra Ra’s





In the 1980’s Power dressing was key look.

Men had the choice of ripped jeans, cycling
shorts & Kickers.
Giorgio Armani was a key designer. See:
Armani.
A designer who continues to influence
fashion arrived in 1984. See: Galliano
New Romantics and Goths also influenced
design.
