Definitions
• Pronoun: a word that replaces
a noun
• Antecedent: the noun that a
pronoun replaced
Agreement
• The antecedent and pronoun must agree in
number (singular or plural) and gender
– Ex: Everyone looked at his watch. Correct or Incor.?
– EX: Everyone looked at their watch. C or I?
– EX: Samuel watched his dog at the park. C or I?
– EX: Samuel watched her dog at the park. C or I?

• Reflexive: Pronoun that refers to the subject
and is necessary to basic meaning of sentence
– Ex: She gave herself the day off.
• Intensive: Pronoun that emphasizes its
antecedent and is unnecessary to basic
sentence meaning
– Ex: David himself bought a car.

Depending on their meaning in a sentence, the indefinite pronouns:
all, any, more, most, none, and some: may be singular OR plural
EX: None of the cereal has lost its crunch.
EX: None of the cereal flakes have lost their crunch.
