The reading test will be a single paper with questions based on three passages of text. Your child will have one hour, including reading time, to complete the test. There will be a selection of question types. Ranking/ordering Example: ‘Number the events below to show the order in which they happen in the story’ Labelling Example: ‘Label the text to show the title of the story.’ ’Find and copy Example: ‘Find and copy one word that suggests what the weather is like in the story.’ Open-ended response Example: ‘Look at the sentence that begins Once upon a time. Explain fully, referring to the text in your answer.’ Short constructed response, Example: ‘What does the bear eat?’ The grammar, punctuation and spelling test will consist of two parts. A grammar and punctuation paper requiring short answers, lasting 45 minutes. An aural spelling test of 20 words, lasting around 15. The score needed to reach the national average has yet to be announced. Useful link. https://www.gov.uk/guidance/scaled-scores More information on scaled scores from the Government. Presentation to Parents and Carers Maths SATs 2016 The children will sit three papers in maths: • Paper 1: arithmetic – 30 minutes • Papers 2 and 3: reasoning – 40 minutes per paper Paper 1 consists of fixed response questions, where children have to give the correct answer to calculations, including long multiplication and division Papers 2and 3 involve a number of question types including multiple choice, true or false, constrained questions e.g. giving the answer to a calculation, drawing a shape, completing a table or chart and less constrained questions where children will have to explain their approach to solving a problem. The Changes: • The focus is far more on arithmetic and the written methods as well as problem solving and reasoning • Children will no longer receive a level at the end of the year but will be judged against ARE (age related expectations) • Basic trigonometry is now on the test • Multi-step problems that require pupils to take multiple mathematical steps • Skills tested are more difficult Arithmetic example Reasoning Paper - examples How can the School and you help? • Support your child with learning but do not put undue pressure on them • Build confidence through a ‘You can’ attitude • Ensure they get accustomed to working with time limits • Reading things carefully and checking understanding • Reading with your child every day and in different context – follow the tips Useful links https://www.gov.uk/government/collections/nation al-curriculum-assessments-2016-sample-materials Sample assessment materials http://www.theschoolrun.com/key-stage-2-SATs2016 General information and ‘free SATs Programme and SATS eBook. http://www.sats-papers.co.uk/sats-papers-ks2.php Free downloads of SAT papers Useful links https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/nation al-curriculum-in-england-mathematics-programmesof-study National Curriculum for England http://www.cambridgecsd.org/webpages/ktoleman/c omprehension.cfm?subpage=448286 Helpful tips for reading with your child (non UK site)
