What are KS2 SATs
Standard Assessment Tests
All children have to be tested before they go to
High School
Provide assessment information for High School
Purpose – assign National Curriculum levels to
children before they level primary school.
What level should Y6
children be at
Level 2 – these children will not be entered for
the tests
Level 3 – below age related expectations
Level 4 – age related expectations
Level 5 – above age related expectations

The Reading Test
Level 3-5
Children are given a reading booklet with three
to four texts. There will be no theme. The least
demanding text will come first with the following
texts increasing in difficulty.
The children will have an hour to read the texts
answer approximately 35 questions totalling 50
marks
The Reading Test
Level 3-5
Children can refer back to the texts in the
reading booklet throughout the tests.
Questions are: shorter closed response items
and longer, more open response types.
Questions are worth 1,2 or 3 marks.
Reading Test Level 6
A reading booklet containing around three or four texts
based on the same theme which children have 10 minutes
to read.
They may refer back to the text to answer questions.
There are approximately 25 questions (Totalling 3035marks)
They have 50 minutes to answer the questions.
Questions are worth 1,2,3 or 4 marks.

How can parents help with reading?
Ensure your child reads every night!
Encourage them to read fiction and non-fiction
Try to ask the questions about the text
Help them with the different skills of reading,
especially ‘skim’ reading where they are looking for
key words in the text.

English Grammar, Punctuation
and Spelling Test
The test will assess children’s ability in grammar,
punctuation, spelling and vocabulary.
Paper 1 has short answer questions (40-50
questions) assessing grammar, punctuation and
vocabulary (50marks) . Paper 2 assesses spellings
(20 marks).
The results for the English test will be reported
separately by the Department of Education. This
means no overall English level will be given.
Pupil’s writing will be assessed by Teachers.

A writing task assessing their grammar,
punctuation and vocabulary.

How can parents help with Spelling,
Grammar and Punctuation?
Ensure your child reads every night!
Encourage them to read fiction and non-fiction
Ask them questions about they punctuation
marks they come across.
Ensure your child learns their spellings at home
– it carries a high score on the test.
Mathematics Tests
Level 3-5
Two non calculator papers, lasting 45 minutes
each.
Mental Mathematics test lasts 20 minutes. (20
marks)
Children’s marks from all three tests are
combined to calculate their overall mathematics
level.

Paper 1 is a non calculator paper, lasting 30
minutes.
Paper 2 is a calculator paper lasting 30 minutes
long.
Children’s marks from both tests are combined
to calculate their overall mathematics level.
How can parents help with Maths?
Practice Problem Solving questions – reading
through the question will broaden their
experience of interpreting question (draw a
picture will help)
TIMES TABLES!
Help your child to check through their work – this
will help them spot mistakes that can sometimes
be easily fixed.
Revision (Half Term
onwards)
In addition to normal lessons, children will be given
workbooks to use for revision and assessment in
Maths and SPaG.
There will be an increase in homework (shorter
bursts, with study book to help).
Maths: Workbook
SPaG: Wookbook
Reading: Short texts with a focus on specific
comprehension skills
Spellings will continue as normal.
Top Tips
Ensure children have a good nights sleep before the tests.
One of the best helps is to continue to take an interest in learning and
progress.
Make sure children have breakfast before they come to school and ensure
they are in school on time. (There is a breakfast club starting at 8.15 a.m. that
week)
Talk to them about the tests.
Don’t put too much pressure on them.
Please don’t bok anything during this week and if your child is ill, let us know
immediately.
