Working Towards (W) Level 1 C B A Level 2 C B A Level 3 C B A Level 4 C B A C B A Level 5 NC Expectation for Year 2 NC Expectation for Year 6 • For the first time since 1998, the structure of the test changed last year. Previously children had a booklet with 3-4 different texts based around a common theme. They had 15 minutes to read and then 45 minutes to answer questions. • This year texts will not share a common theme and pupils will be given 60 minutes to read and work through the questions independently. • Prior to 2014, pupils were given 30-35 questions worth up to 3 marks, totalling a mark out of 50. This year there will be 35-40 questions, still out of a total of 50. • Significantly, the first text will be the least demanding with the following texts steadily getting more difficult. • No formal test to be externally marked • Levels based on Teacher Assessments, which are made on-going throughout the year, across different curriculum areas. • Teacher assessments may be moderated externally. • Samples of writing at Level 3, Level 4 and Level 5. • Purpose is to test pupils’ grammar, punctuation and spelling. • Only introduced in 2013 • Test is in two parts: the first test grammar and punctuation and consists of short answer, multiple choice or ‘cloze’ type of questions. It lasts 45 minutes. • The spelling test is not timed and tests 20 words. • Maths Test is in three parts: • From 2014, there is now NO calculator paper, therefore level thresholds may rise as there will not be some of the more complex problem-solving questions. • Paper A No Calculator allowed (45 minutes) 40 marks • Paper B No Calculator allowed (45 minutes) 40 marks • Mental Arithmetic Test (CD) 20 marks • Look at examples of past papers • Giving the children some practise papers so they are familiar with the tests, the layout and the type of questions they will be asked • Giving the children practice at working within time limits • Giving the children test strategies i.e. What to do if they can’t answer a question... • Support children with homework • Regular reading practice; if preparing for a race you would train to improve speed and skills, so the children will benefit from improving speed and developing ideas in response to books: overall themes etc... • Look out for interesting vocabulary when reading and look up meaning or ask child to use new words correctly in a sentence. • Give them opportunities for writing and check they have used correct full stops and ‘level 4/5 punctuation’ • Check they are quick and accurate with times tables. Look at maths around us: measures; time problems; timetables... BE POSITIVE!!! Test dates The 2015 Key Stage 2 tests will take place from 11-14th May.
