Ingrid Bergman
Ingrid Bergman was born in Stockholm, and grew up with
relatives after the death of her parents. Bergman knew early on
she’d be a movie star. As a twelve year-old, she bought a diary to
document her path to success. Five years later she joined the
Royal Dramatic Theatre School, but dropped out to work full time
in the movies.
Her career took off when a producer bought the US rights to
the Swedish film Intermezzo, in which Bergman plays the lead
role (in both the Swedish original and the American remake). The
film was a success, and soon after Bergman was offered a slew
of major Hollywood roles, and audiences praised her talent and
beauty.
When she became pregnant with director Roberto Rossellinis
baby in 1950, however, her world temporarily collapsed. Both she
and Rossellini were married to other people and had children
through those marriages. Her pregnancy was roundly criticised,
even in the US Senate, where one senator demanded that she be
deported from the US.
Bergman made a grand comeback in 1956 with the film
Anastasia, for which she won the Academy Award for Best Actress.
After this landmark moment, her career began to flourish again.
Despite many passionate relationships and her four children,
Bergman always knew that acting was her true love. She had
breast cancer while filming her final role in A woman called Golda,
and died before the movie premiered.
