What is the Qu’ran? The Qu’ran is the sacred book of the Muslims. Muslims believe that the Qu’ran is the direct word of Allah to the Prophet Muhammad, through the angel Gabriel. Muslims treat the Qu’ran with great respect, and use it as a source of guidance in every aspect of our lives. Muslims believe that angels were created by Allah out of light! The prophet Muhammad was born in Makkah, Saudi Arabia. His father died before he was born. When he was six years old, his mother also died. When Muhammad was 40 years old, his whole life changed dramatically. He often went by himself into the mountains to pray. One evening as he was meditating, the angel Gabriel appeared before him and showed him a cloth covered in writing. The angel ordered Muhammad to recite the words. Although he could not read or write, he understood what the words said and began to recite them. Muhammad began teaching people about Allah, and many became Muslims. He died in Madinah at the age of 63. Muslims believe that everything in existence comes from one and only God, Allah. Muhammad was the last of the great prophets, named in the Qu’ran. Other prophets include Moses, Abraham and Jesus. To show respect, Muslims write the letters ‘pbuh’ (peace and blessing) after the prophets’ names. Muslims believe that throughout your life, angels record your good and bad deeds. Then, on the last day, Allah will bring all those back to life. Those which were good will be led to Paradise, a place of happiness. • The Qu’ran describes paradise as a beautiful garden, full of refreshing fountains, sweet smelling flowers and singing birds. • Muslims rulers often planted exquisite gardens to give them a taste of paradise! • The Qu’ran is divided into 114 chapters, or surrahs, made up of more than 6,000 verses. The chapters always appear in the same order but this is not the same order as Muhammad received them. Make a list in your books of all the rules you follow every day. Have you ever broken a rule and paid the consequences? The Qu’ran is always treated with great respect. Muslims must not let it get dirty or touch the ground. When it is not in use, the Qu’ran is wrapped in cloth. A Muslim who can recite the Qu’ran from memory is called a Hafiz. It is thought to be a sign of great excellence. Muslims should also read books like the Hadith which tell what Muhammad did and taught. These are the letters in Arabic. Which letters are missing? Can you write these sentences using Arabic letters? God is the Creator of all Life If you finish this task, write a sentence you think you might find in the Qu’ran.
