Study Away
Oberlin College
•

Between 100 and 150 students each
semester study away from Oberlin on
approved semester-long programs.
Between 15 and 30 of these students are
on full-year programs.
Nearly 500 students spent time abroad last
year during the winter term, semester, or
summer—over 200 of these during the
winter term.
Winter Term International
Group Projects



May be organized and led by faculty,
volunteers or students
Wide range of topics including service
learning, performance tours, academic field
work, and language immersion
Additional costs for international Winter
Term projects range from app. $600-$2000
Sample Winter Term 2015
International Group Projects

Panama Project: A long-standing Conservatory project that
focuses on Oberlin music students teaching and performing with
Panamanian students.

Music in London:Yesterday and Today: A
faculty led project exploring the history of music in London.

WT in Guadalajara, Mexico: A faculty led program
focusing on Spanish language study and cultural immersion.

Shakespeare in Rome: A faculty-led educational trip
combining a study of art, history, mythology, and Shakespeare’s
Roman plays.
Financial Help for International
Winter Term Projects


Students can apply for individual grants
from the Winter Term Committee.
Group projects often apply for funding to
support student costs as well.

Students may design their own international
winter term project as long as they find an
approved on-campus sponsor.
Office of Programs for International Study
provides logistical support.
We strongly recommend that students

Choosing a study away
program

Begin by defining educational goals for time away
(language acquisition, connection to major,
geographic location, etc.)
Speak with academic advisor or come to the Study
Away Office (Peters 205) for further help including
group information sessions and individual advising
Search the Study Away Library or online for
information about specific programs
Look at evaluations from previous Oberlin
participants - available in the Study Away Office

Financing Study Away

Oberlin tuition (or the program tuition if higher) is charged for all
approved academic leave programs. Room and Board charges will be
those charged by the program. Need-based and merit financial aid will
apply to Oberlin Affiliated Programs.
Family contribution is still expected.
Non-affiliated programs allow federal aid to apply if student qualifies.
For answers to specific financial questions, contact the Office of
Financial Aid.
GLCA Tuition Remission Exchange benefit applies to Oberlin ENR
programs and GLCA-recognized (consortial) programs.
