Some additional support for students with financial need. ALOA Application • • • Information about you, your educational reasons for wanting to study away, and your progress and plan for graduation Essay and advisor approval Justification for fall or spring request Transfer of Credit Information • • • • • • Must be enrolled as a full-time student as defined by the program ALOA semester = 4 courses/16 credits One CD course counts from ALOA if taken abroad or on certain US programs Courses may count toward major but not toward curriculum distribution ALOA courses do not count toward 3 course/12 credit transfer limit Credits transfer but grades do not Affiliated Programs • • • Have been approved by Oberlin department or program and the Off-Campus Study Committee Oberlin financial aid/scholarship and federal aid will apply if qualified Includes GLCA-recognized programs Non-affiliated programs • • • Not specifically approved by an Oberlin department or program Only Federal financial aid will apply to the program cost if qualified Approval for ALOA and transfer of credit may be more difficult Suggestions for planning Narrow down list of majors/declare your major Discuss study away plans with advisor in major department Take a look at the study away website: oberlin.edu/studyaway As early as October 2015 (after fall break): Attend a required study away application help session to start ALOA application account Meet with study away advisor Financing Study Away • • • • • • • Generally, the same family contribution is still expected. On Oberlin-in-London (ENR) tuition and fees apply. Oberlin tuition is charged for other programs. Room and board charges are determined by the program fees. Oberlin Affiliated programs allow Oberlin and Federal aid to apply to tuition for the semester. Non-affiliated programs allow federal aid to apply if student qualifies. For answers to specific financial questions, contact the Office of Financial Aid. www.studyabroadfunding.org Study Away Program Scholarships • • Many study away programs have scholarships (merit and need-based) to help offset costs not covered by normal aid and Oberlin scholarship Example: SIT Bonner scholarship, IFSA Butler First Generation Scholarship, CIEE GAIN Scholarship Oberlin College Additional Scholarships • Julie Taymor ‘74 Fund for World Culture – Fund is intended to support additional costs for students study abroad in the arts. Preference given to non-Western location and students with financial need. • Adventure Fund, Lurain-Alvardo, Bruno Funds – These funds are intended to support additional costs for students studying abroad. Preference given to students with financial need.
