The joined by Robert Delaunay and Fernand Léger, amongst
several others. This art movement influenced more than just
other artists, but musicians, authors and architects.
Cubism…
• objects are analyzed, broken up and reassembled in an
abstracted form
• The artist depicts the subject from a multitude of
viewpoints

during this time period
• Art from other cultures revealed that shapes and forms
could be simplified and rearranged to increase power

• Cézanne - who started to develop the style as an

This is considered by many the first cubist painting.
During the late 19th and early 20th centuries, Europeans were discovering African,
Micronesian and Native American art. Artists such as Pablo Picasso were intrigued and inspired
by the stark power and simplicity of styles of those foreign cultures- reflected in his art.

- Subject matter were often musical objects
- He adopted a monochromatic and neutral color palette in the belief that such a palette
would emphasize the subject matter

he created a personal form of cubism which he gradually modified into a more figurative,
or abstract style. His work was “for the people” –not just politicians and the elites. His
boldly simplified treatment of modern subject matter has caused him to be regarded as a
forerunner of Pop Art!
