separating suspended solid
matter from a liquid, by
causing the latter to pass
through the pores of some
substance, called a filter.

• It is used to separate an insoluble solid from a liquid.
• Filtration is useful because both phases can be obtained
in one process.
• The insoluble material is collected as a residue on filter
paper.
