Physical Education is the process by which changes in the individual are bought about through movements experiences. Physical Education aims not only at physical development but is also concerned with education of the whole person through physical activities. Physical education is the play-way method of education. Barrow defined Physical Education as an education through human movement that achieved by means of big muscle activities involving sports, games, gymnastic, dance and exercise. According to Webster’s Dictionary Physical education is a part of education which gives instructions in the development and care of the body Jackson R. Sharman points out that physical education that takes place through activities, which involves the motor mechanism Charles A. Bucher defines physical education, an integral part of total education process PLAY- refers to activities engaged in freely for amusement. Games- are derived from play, which the outcome is determined by strategy, skills, or chance. Sports are organized, competitive physical activities governed by rules. Sports provide meaningful opportunities to demonstrate one’s competence and to challenge one’s limits. Health Education concerns itself with the total well being of the individual, encompassing physical, mental, social, emotional, and spiritual health. Three (3) Areas: Health Instruction can encompass many areas, including disease prevention, mental health, nutrition, physical fitness, stress management, and dealing with abuse of drugs and alcohol. Delivery of Health services concerned with developing and maintaining a satisfactory level of health for all people. Services may include routine eye examinations, cholesterol and blood pressure monitoring and cancer screening. Environmental Health is within health education. Its primary concern is the development of healthful and safe environments. Recreation is generally thought of as self-chosen activities that provide a means of refreshing one’s body and spirit. (leisure time) Dance is a popular of people of all ages and is both a physical activity and a performing art Reasons why people dance: to communicate feelings; provides opportunities for enjoyment, self expression and relaxation; a form of therapy; to cope with the various stress; means to develop fitness. Definition of Terms PHYSICAL ACTIVITY- any bodily movement produced by the contraction of the skeletal muscles EXERCISE- physical activity that is planned, structured, and repetitive in the improvement or maintenance of physical fitness. PHYSICAL FITNESS- is the capacity of people to perform physical activities. HEALTH-RELATED FITNESS- concerned with the development and maintenance of fitness components that can enhance health and well-being (cardiorespiratory endurance, muscular strength, muscular endurance, flexibility, and body composition). PERFORMANCE-RELATED FITNESS- concerned with the development and maintenance of fitness components that can enhance performance in physical activities such as sports. (agility, balance, coordination, power, reaction time, and speed) HEALTH- is the general well-being of the individual and comprises several different dimensions. WELLNESS- a state of optimal well-being, stresses the importance of the individual taking an active role in achieving a healthy lifestyle. HOLISTIC HEALTH- is closely aligned with wellness. Holistic health is an individual's health is affected by most aspects of an individuals life. Physical, psychological, emotional, social, spiritual, environmental, and genetic factors all interact to influence an individual's state of health.
