FORUM: UNDP QUESTION OF: Measures to adapt to climate change MAIN SUBMITTER: China CO SUBMITTERS: Zimbabwe, New Zealand, Jamaica, Haiti, Nigeria Noting with deep concern of how the past eight years have had the highest ever recorded temperatures ever, Having considered some portions of the Arctic region have shrunk by 906496km squared, Alarmed by how the global average temperature has increased by about 1 degree Celsius since the late 19th century, Concerned by the rising sea levels that have risen by about 8 inches since 1880, Expressing its appreciation for the UNFCCC UN Framework Convection Climate Change in providing aid for developing countries to adapt to climate change, Recognizing the Adaptation Fund, established by the UNFCCC to support adaptation projects through financial Aid in developing countries, Fully alarmed by the health risks climate change has brought with increased exposure from ultra violet (UV) light, Taking note of the annual average of 21.5 million people that have been forcibly displaced by weather-related events, 1. Calls for members states to increase their usage of renewable energy sources such as , but not limited to Bio-fuels , solar energy and tidal energy 2. Asks member states that have coast and ports to consider the erecting of sea walls throughout their coasts to reduce the implications of rising sea levels and flooding. 3. Invites member states to implement and introduce new agricultural and farming systems such as: a) Increasing the number of imports of drought resilient crops in their nation to have food reserves in times of droughts inflicted by climate change b) Promote crop diversification and multiple cropping, to retain and increase soil fertility. 4. Further calls for the UNEP to cooperate with member states in creating and advancement of afforestation and anti-deforestation projects with their states by: 5. 6. 7. 8. a) Supplying seeds and shoots of plants that are well adapted for the specific region which of each member state being considered for this seed aid b) Helping in creation of special task forces that the ruling party of each state will assign to forests to maintain the environment Expresses its hope for countries to develop early disaster warning systems such as : a) Digitalized storm and flood alerts b) Putting together disaster task force teams to evacuate residents of places at risk before the disaster happens Further calls for the United Nations Department of Public Information (DPI) to work with state governances to spread awareness and education of climate change through: a) Using media outlets such as pamphlets , radio broadcasts and news stories to spread awareness on the implications of climate change b) To implement education programs that will notify its people on suitable responses to climate related disasters and other means of reducing the rate of increase in global temperatures Supports the use of water management infrastructure and management by: a) Encouraging governments to fund the building of man-made water sources such as dams, reservoirs and tanks in order to have a quick source of water during times of floods b) Advising farmers and other individuals in each members state to partake in rain water harvesting schemes during rainy periods to have a viable source of water during dry seasons Deplores the World Bank to give monetary funds to states in order to fund the construction of buildings that are resilient to climate change related weather disasters such as : a. Building stilts in regions most prone to flooding or near river deltas b. Reinforcing foundations of buildings as a means of increasing their chances in surviving natural disasters , to prevent homelessness as a result
