Any occurrence that cause damage, ecological disruption, loss of human life (W.H.O) Any occurrence either natural or manmade that cause human suffering and creates critical situation that human needs help (ARC) But they impact poor and vulnerable the most LOW INCOME COUNTRIES ACCOUNT ONLY FOR 9% OF THE WORLDS DISASTERS, BUT …… Low Income Countries Natural hazards in Pakistan are often and have severe intensity. Lack of basic knowledge about it at schools and colleges in the country, enhances the human and capital losses. 48% OF FATALIITIES Natural and technological hazards affect the everyday life as well as long-term development plans. For many decades the prevailing approach in dealing with disasters was focus on response and recovery, however lately pre-disaster actions to minimize the disaster risks are encouraged. 1.Mitigation 2.Preparedness 3.Response 4.Recovery The ethical principles applied during disasters: (i) Humanitarian assistance; (ii) Information and participation during disasters; (iii) Compulsory evacuation of population; (iv) Respect of person; (v) Emergency assistance for the most vulnerable person; Disasters may be explosions, earthquakes, floods, hurricanes, tornados, or fires. In a disaster, you face the danger of death or physical injury. You may also lose your home, possessions, loss of property and community. Such stressors place you at risk for emotional and physical health problems. Haiti Earthquake of 2010. (On the West Indian island of Hispaniola, comprising the countries of Haiti and the Dominican Republic. More than 220,000 people were killed and over 300,000 injured.) Hurricane Katrina of 2005. (A tropical cyclone that struck the southeastern United States. More than 1,800 lives) Hurricane Andrew of 1993. (Southern Florida) Tohoku Earthquake and Tsunami 2011. (Japan, resulted in over 18,000 dead) Tangshan Earthquake 1976. (China, 240,000 death) disaster management and recovery efforts during Hurricane Andrew. A number of valuable lessons can be learnt from the Cyclone Nargis 2008. (On 2 May 2008, Cyclone Nargis devastated Myanmar. The disaster left over 130,000 people dead or missing and another 2.4 million people were affected.) China Earthquake 2008.
