Minute Paper…Think… “Speak Up”… (This is an evidence-based reflection tool) Please answer the following with a sentence or two and turn it in to your clinical faculty. 1. What are the best parts of the experience? The interactive modules with videos, multiple choice questions, and matching. Much better than simply clicking through a PowerPoint. 2. Name one new thing you learned? I learned about the National Voluntary Organizations Active in Disasters (National VOAD). This forum was created so organizations can share knowledge and resources throughout the disaster cycle—preparation, response, and recovery—to help survivors and their communities. 3. Did anything surprise you about this experience? If so, what? I was surprised to learn that FEMA was part of the DHS. This was done in response to the September 11th terrorist attacks. When most people think of FEMA, they think about hurricanes and earthquakes, not necessary man-made disasters such as mass killings. 4. How does this activity address primary, secondary or tertiary levels of prevention? The activity goes into depth on how organizations, both nonprofit and for profit, communicate with local and national government for disasters. Importantly, it covers how in forums like the National VOAD these entities prepare for disasters before they happen (primary prevention) to prevent a greater loss of life or increased injury. The secondary prevention includes routine inspection of dams and levees as well as monitoring equipment. Tertiary prevention includes the cohesive efforts in the immediate and ongoing response to a disaster. 5. Is this one area of public health that you may be in your future? I would consider working for organizations such as the Red Cross in emergency situations. However, I am concerned about being allowed time off from work on short notice as well as pay to cover my expenses both while at the disaster location and my fixed expenses at home (rent, car payment, phone/internet, etc.) 6. Is the content clearly presented? The content is clearly presented and interactive. Honestly, it is much better than I am used to from government websites. 7.Any other thoughts… Nope
