Case study report
“Bharti Airtel's executive board” is diversified, trying to portray a mix of abilities and
experience in areas such as “strategic leadership and management”, industry and sector
experience or understanding, financial and risk management, governance, corporate
development knowledge and experience, public policy, and charitable work, among others
(Case study, n.d.). Bharti Airtel views Corporate Governance as a way of achieving the
Company's goals and objectives in a legally compliant, ethical manner and transparent, while
also safeguarding the better interests of all shareholders.
The Firm's “Company Governance Philosophy” is inspired by its goal of producing and
improving protracted value for stakeholders, as well as its basic values of someone being
active, accessible, and courteous. Considering the diversity within the leadership executive
and leadership structure, the “Airtel Board of Directors” directs, manages, and monitors the
corporate purpose, profitability, and administration. The Management creates the
administration framework to adhere to the highest standards and has a fiduciary obligation to
make sure that the firm's objectives and actions are aligned with both the firm's development
and protracted objectives. Corporate Governance at Bharti Airtel is focused on building and
maintaining a genuine trustworthy relationship as well as openness including all constituents
(Case study, n.d.). In all of their activities across the world, they adhere to ethical business
practices. Despite commercial obstacles and economic volatility, they regard stakeholders as
partners in their progress and are devoted to ensuring overall well-being. In terms of the
diversity within the leadership executive and leadership structure, there are some main factors
that are Leadership diversity, Leadership structure, Ethical guidelines, External stakeholders
and Prioritisation guidelines. In today's changing corporate climate, a strong governance
structure is required to maintain a high-performance of services, adaptive management style
and culture of integrity. The Firm's Professional Administration system is multi-tiered, with
multiple levels of governing or management boards.
In the context of leadership diversity in Airtel, it employs a "situational and participatory
leadership style", which requires leaders to incorporate their leadership structure to the
situational process as well as the individuals they are leading. “Participative leadership”
provide guarantee that organizational decisions are made mainly democratically and that
consumers are committed to completing tasks ahead of schedule. Situational leadership, on
either extreme, allows a leader to incorporate their leadership process to the demands of their
specific subordinates. This type of leadership provides decision-makers with a simple as well

as straightforward process for evaluating which leadership style will perform best with a
certain work in a specific scenario. It is indeed a flexible strategy that ensures staff get
adequate and proper assistance as well as motivation without being over-managed or stifled
(Case study, n.d.). The organisation represents an attempt to participate actively in the project
management as well as to train them for upcoming shows and unusual scenarios.
In the context of Leadership structure in the company, the “Managing Director & CEO” is in
charge of India as well as South Asia's strategy implementation and overall business success.
The “Airtel Management Board (AMB)” backs him up. Cellular Modems, Housing, Airtel
Corporate, International Calling & Internet Commercial, Wynk and Developing Companies,
and Digital Television Facilities are the six “Business Units (BUs)” that make up the Firm's
Indian operations. Also, The “CEO of Airtel Africa plc.”, a subordinate business, oversees the
Company's activities in Africa (Airtel Africa Annual Report, 2020). He seems to be in charge
of the execution of the plan as well as the overall success of the company. The “Africa
Executive Committee” endorses him up. Several of the fourteen African companies are led by
a “Country Managing Director”, who is corroborated by either a Management Board (Airtel
Africa Annual Report, 2020).
In terms of the ethical guidelines of the company, the “Board of Directors” develops Airtel’s
organization's long-term strategy and policy approach in order to continually improve
governance quality (Airtel Annual Report, 2021). They implement a well-defined set of
guidelines and a well-established organizational form of governance. Their goal is to become
a leading company in their sector, both regionally and worldwide, with a focus on increasing
value for all individuals who are directly or indirectly involved in their success. The Board
places a high priority on developing a worldwide talent pool, adhering to ethical business
standards, and aligning all of the corporate operations because of the need to protect and
preserve the environment through green practices and technology. The “Board of Directors”
brings together a comprehensive range of skills and education, including international capital,
telecommunications, general administration, professional support, and consultancy. To
achieve the highest operational efficiency and social-economic maximization of profit, the
Chairman and Managing Directors & CEOs have clearly defined roles and responsibilities
(Airtel Annual Report, 2021). Through constant examination and comparison, we ensure that
corporate governance meets global standards.
In terms of the external stakeholders and internal stakeholders as well as the “stakeholder’s
relationship committee, the Board representatives also go to Airtel stores and engage clients
and customers to get a quick glimpse at the company's products or services. The Corporation

does have a “Stakeholders' Relationship Committee” in accordance with Regulation 20 of the
“Listing Regulations”, as well as the requirements and “regulations of Section 178 of the
Corporations Act, 2013” (Airtel Annual Report, 2021). The Board is made up of four people,
two of whom are independent non-executive directors. The Chairman of the Committee is Mr
Rakesh Bharti Mittal, the Non-Executive Board member. The Financial Manager also serves
as the Commission's Secretary (Airtel Annual Report, 2021). The CEO of Airtel has a unique
leadership style. He is a firm believer in putting one's heart and soul into anything one does,
as well as having trust in one's own abilities. He chose a leadership style that develops
individuals to the point where they no longer require leadership. This aided him in forming a
deep bond with his staff. In terms of privatisation principles, the organization's leadership
concentrated on workers, particularly Pride fashion's procedures and people. The capacity to
make decisions in the face of ambiguity, as well as the alignment of organisational goals with
personnel ambitions. On the other hand, the ability to react quickly to changes in the macroenvironment is being viewed as a privatisation criterion.
Ethical leadership demonstrates a deep belief in principles. Ethical leadership values
include disclosure, justice, impartiality, kindness, and honesty. The success of every firm is
dependent on ethical leadership. Ethics has been characterised as leadership that is focused on
appropriate behaviour based on mutual respect for rules or principles, as well as the
independence of others. Companies benefit through ethical leadership since it motivates
employees to be engaged while also adhering to the company's values. As according
observation, ethical leadership increases employee involvement and fewer layoffs. Authentic
leaders should behave ethically and responsibly in all facets of their lives, even if their
behaviors are often not apparent to their employees (Airtel Annual Report, 2021). Ethical
leadership can be unsettling at times, such as when an individual is fired for profiting from a
responsible environmental firm. On the other side, leadership places a premium on
maintaining one's trustworthiness. Professionals and scholars agree that authenticity,
impartiality, patience, sympathy, and integrity are the five key aspects of ethical leadership. In
a company like Airtel, leadership is as much about walking the walk as it is about saying the
right things. Good leaders anticipate outstanding performance from their staff and hold
themselves to almost the same exacting standards. Managers also want their team members to
follow their lead. Anticipating prospective problems is one thing; coping with them because
they occur is another. To cope with such problems, Airtel might take the following steps:

Prepare ahead of time: Envision how Airtel would react in hypothetical events so
they can consider the ethical implications ahead of time. Because individuals may

6
possess less information to make a judgment in an emergency, this type of practice
can be beneficial.

Evaluate the facts: Consider taking the time to thoroughly consider all of the facts
Airtel receives about a circumstance wherever feasible. Before users respond, make
sure that someone has done anything unethical.

Obtain assistance: Talking out an ethical problem with a colleague, supervisor, or
maybe even a theological counsellor may be quite beneficial. Assessing counsel
objectively can assist Airtel in making critical ethical judgments.
As corporate engagement and community involvement become increasingly incorporated into
corporate leadership, constituents' impact on how firms function has grown. A business like
Airtel, for instance, cannot function in the absence of people and supervisors. Consumers are
major external participants since they will purchase and then utilize the brand (Case study,
n.d.). Consumers, workers, neighbourhoods, and company associates are just a few of the
main stakeholder groups who have a say in how the firm operates. Increasing the volume of
items or services purchased by Airtel will result in increased earnings. Lower earnings will
follow from reducing the number of items or services they purchase.

Reflection report
While undertaking this course, I was very excited since I got the opportunity to learn
something that I have always desired. The leadership program or the unit has allowed me to
learn not just one skill, but multiple other skills. I was initially very nervous about whether I
would be able to grasp the concepts. But the teachers made the lectures and the programs so
lucid, that I developed further interest. This has allowed me to formulate an action plan as
well, that will help me inwidening my perspectives on leadership. From the given case
scenario on Bharti Airtel, I felt that the winning strategies that the company utilizes is very
beneficial for their growth, and has provided them with the success that they have wanted.
The aspects of CSR or Corporate Social Responsibility, that the company has incorporated in
their mission deserves special significance. They have been able to participate in multiple
CSR projects. However there were leadership skills that were observed. There have been the
analysis of multiple other case scenarios, this being one prominent example. However, it is
not possible to give a detailed description of all the scenarios, hence I would focus on the
aspects that this unit has helped me in the development of my career. The core learning
structure that this module has presented, has allowed me to focus on improving the learning
culture. This integrated module has definitely allowed me to create many opportunities for
my career growth. The leadership styles and the management styles that I got to learn has
allowed me to effectively think and rethink about my career options. Needless to say that the
leadership skills that I have learnt had a major impact in my life. Firstly, it has helped me to
make critical decisions effectively. Thereby my problem solving skills have developed
drastically. I have been able to set clear goals about my career. The case study that has been
provided concerning Bharti Airtel, depicts that fact that their success have primarily been due
to their efficient leadership structure and organization. The course has made it clear to me that
leadership is majorly about bringing out the best and brightest side in others. I feel that this
would be of immense help to me, when I would attain leadership position in any organization
in the future. I have also put the leadership skills that I have learnt into practice.
However I am going to elaborate on the key learnings that I have learnt from this
course and which I feel is significant for my career. I feel that the in-depth coverage of the
topics that have been taught in the course, has been of immense help to me, since I desire to
achieve leadership position in future. Reflections on the learning can be a very significant and
empowering process since that helps in the analysis of the situation very carefully. I have

learnt that the role of leaders are very crucial for the successful running of an organization.
Effective management begins with self-awareness, which asserts that the leaders needs to
understand and portray their strengths and weaknesses. As per me, I have been able to
identify some of the major weaknesses wherein I was lacking focus. The leadership styles and
the management skills that I have learnt in the unit has enabled me to identify them and make
the necessary changes. I understand the fact that the development of culture of respect for
myself requires a considerable amount of time since it has been stated that students are
usually not taught about such higher levels of professionalism. The unit has allowed me to
develop certain core skills which I lacked. A leader should always possess integrity that
would determine the value of his actions and words. Needless to assert that when I see myself
as a leader in some organization in the future, I would want to act responsibly. I would
definitely want to create a sense of trust and abide by that and not breach it. I would like to
maintain healthy and friendly relations with my fellow co-workers, which would also allow
them to achieving the goals of the organization.Throughout the unit and the course, I was
taught as to how a reflective approach can be important and benefit those who are aspiring to
become future leaders. This helps in the identification of the actions. For that, we have been
taught some reflective activities that would be of help to us in the future and would enable us
to become good leaders. Development of communicational skills has been one of these. Apart
from that, the development and inculcation of the interpersonal skills also deserve special
mention. The unit has allowed me to develop these core skills which are important for any
leader to possess. Certain brainstorming sessions related to leadership were also conducted.
Apart form that the exercise of role plays had allowed me to be more creative. This included
the identification of a problem situation and we were asked to assume that these problems
would lead to the identification of probable solutions.
Thereby, the leadership skills that I have learnt would be of immense help to me for
advancing in my career. The primary skill that I have learnt is decisiveness. Efficient leaders
bear the capability of making quick and effective decisions with the information that they
have. Here, decisiveness is one of the most potential skills since it has enabled me to move
projects fast and thereby improve the efficiency. Team building is the other skill that I have
learnt. While asserting that, team building requires strong communication skills and
adherence to proper methods of conflict resolution. Problem solving skills have also
drastically improved in me after having completed the unit. It has helped me to make quick
decisions and effectively remove the obstacles that might hinder me form achieving my

goals. Diplomacy is the major solution here. Some of the major leadership styles that had a
great influence on me are Coach, Visionary and Democratic. The coach leadership style has
allowed me to learn that one needs to recognize the strengths of the team members for
helping them improve. This would help in the overall improvement of the organization. This
leadership style helps in the setting up of clear expectations and the creation of a positive
environment. The visionary leadership style has taught me that inspiring the employees and
earning their trust is one of the core concerns of a leader. This helps a leader in establishing a
strong organizational bond. The democratic leadership style has taught me that feedback is
important for the successful running of an organization. This style helps in the fostering of
high levels of employee engagement. Proving workplace satisfaction is one of the most
sought activity under this kind of leadership. These three leadership styles, in particular, has
inculcated in optimistic fervours when I think about my future as a leader.
The course has been so interesting that I have formulated an action plan that I believe
would help me in developing my leadership skills.
