DIVERSITY OF
MATERIALS IN
THE
ENVIRONMENT
WHY DO YOU THINK CLASSIFYING IS
AN IMPORTANT SCIENTIFIC SKILL?

Classification is important because it allows scientists to
identify, group, and properly name organisms, rocks,
chemicals, or typhoons using a standardized system.

Makes communication easier by giving just one name for
each individual.

Classification organizes information according to grouping.

Classification enables scientists to predict similarities of
behavior, reactions, or properties within the same group.
Due to the countless number of materials on
earth, it is practical to group or classify them first
according to their compositions.
PURE SUBSTANCES – materials whose
components are made up of only one kind.
MIXTURES – materials that are made up of more
than one kind of material.
However, there are mixtures tat look very much
like pure substances. In fact, the purified bottled
water we buy is actually not pure at all. This kind
od mixture is called solution. Solutions are
important in the study of the material reactions.
It is in these kinds of materials where changes
usually occurs.
WHAT IS A SOLUTION?

Is a mixture of two or more substances which componeny
substance has unique properties that do not change even
after they are mixed.

These components are well mixed that we cannot identify
each of them in the mixture.
For example: Water + powdered juice
salt + water
SOLUTES AND SOLVENTS

Solute – is the component that is being dissolved in the
solution.

Solvent – the component that dissolves the solute
Example: salt + water
salt – is the solute of the solution
water – solvent
What are the solute and solvent in the
sugar solution?
For solution whose solute and solvents components are both
liquids or are both solids?

The component of lesser amount is the solute while

The component that has greater amount is the solvent
