SMALL BOTTLE, BIG DIFFERENCE: 3 reasons why by using your bottle you help improve the world www.720dgree.de Water is the blood of the Earth. Leonardo da Vinci www.720dgree.de Regardless whether drinking, cooking or showering, without water nothing works. We live in one of the most water-rich regions of the world as you will later see yourself. What else the water is used for and how you can help people in less fortunate regions, you will find out in this book. TAKE CARE OF YOURSELF WATER IS VITAL TO LIFE Your body consists of 60-70% water, which is found in cells, blood plasma, spine, eyes, stomach, and joints. In the cells, for example, water helps transport oxygen, while in the kidneys it helps with the elimination of toxins, and, in the brain, it is crucial in the production of hormones and neurotransmitters. www.720dgree.de HOW MUCH WATER SHOULD YOU DRINK PER DAY? 1,5-2 Liter 2-2,5 Liter Of course, if you happen to do a lot of sports, live in a warm region, or need more water for other reasons, you should adjust your water intake accordingly and drink sufficiently more. DID YOU KNOW THAT... (in liters) So many liters of water are used to produce 1 kg of the following products: Toilet 40 Beef 15.415 Lamb / Goat Meat 8.763 www.720dgree.de 3.265 1.644 Milk Fruit Veggies 962 Garden 17 7 6 5 Drinking / Cooking 3 Cereal 4.325 1.020 Cleaning 37 Personal Hygiene 5.988 7 Eggs Laundry Pork Dishwasher Chicken Shower 122 liters is the average daily consumption of water in private households per 1 person 322 (Source: Water Footprint Network) (Source: Deutsche Bausparkasse Baderia AG) PET-BOTTLES AND POLLUTION Now we know why water is not only vital to our bodies but also to the food production as well as personal hygiene and everyday chores. No wonder then that in order to fulfil the daily demands for water, massive amounts of it have to be transported worldwide. Particularly popular in these terms are allegedly practical disposable plastic bottles. www.720dgree.de Staggering 2,000,000 disposable plastic bottles are used in Germany every hour, which amounts to 48,000,000 per day, and an unimaginable consumption of approximately 17,000,000,000 bottles per year. (Source: Deutsche Umwelthilfe) WHY ARE PET-BOTTLES SO HARMFUL? Apart from their massive negative contribution to the waste production and pollution, plastic bottles cause irreparable damage to our oceans. The plastic garbage floating in the oceans gradually deteriorates due to the waves motion and UV light, and releases potentially toxic chemicals. This leads to numerous deaths of marine (not exclussively) species due to ingesting or getting tangled in the plastic, and to an impending ecological disaster. The impact of plastic on the environment and especially on the oceans is addressed in depth, for example, in the documentary Plastic Planet. By using sustainable and recyclable water bottles like our 720°DGREE, you will always have your drink with you, avoid unpleasant aftertaste of the PET-bottles, and, moreover, significantly reduce your waste production. By choosing a reusable bottle, you choose to make a difference and contribute to reducing senseless waste and pollution and to protect our environment. ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACT OF LONG-HAUL FREIGHT TRANSPORT However, not only the production and disposal of PET-bottles are harming our environment. According to the German Environmental Aid e.V., disposable bottles are often transported over longer distances. While the distance of the reusable bottles transportation is on average 260 km, it takes 450 km more for the disposable bottles to get to their destination. As a result, CO2 emissions are almost twice as high for PET bottles. CO2 in kg pro 1,000 liter www.720dgree.de So ask yourself, does our water really have to be transported that far? There is a cheaper alternative: tap water. It is well regulated and its quality is controlled by most developed countries, so why not take the fresh water directly from the tap? Therefore, providing people with safe water is not just a major logistical problem in developing countries but an impending worldwide crisis. FRESHWATER (3,5%) A staggering amount of people do not have an access to safe water every year www.720dgree.de SALT WATER (96.5%) (Source: USGS Water Science School) 4 billion people At least 1 month 1,8–2,9 billion people 4-6 months 500 billion people 12 months TAKE CARE OF OTHERS OUR MISSION To improve the living conditions of the people in need, we have set ourselves the goal to build wells in Ethiopia in cooperation with the Neven Subotic Foundation. www.720dgree.de Why wells? They not only provide access to clean and safe drinking water but also improve the local hygienic conditions. As the result, for example, such diseases as cholera can be prevented and the overall quality of life can be significantly enhanced. NEVEN SUBOTIC STIFTUNG THE CURRENT SITUATION IN ETHIOPIA In arid countries like Ethiopia, for the majority of people, clean water is hard to access. In up to 90% of the cases, women and often children, are responsible for procuring water and firewood (UN Water 2013). In rural Ethiopia, women and children have to walk for up to six hours every day just to get water. The canisters they use weigh almost 20 kilograms each (water.org 2016). Currently, the poor hygiene and, as the result, different illnesses often prevent children from attending the school. “Not only the health risks affect the children’s opportunities,” explains Neven Subotic. “The girls especially are disadvantaged, as it is the female family members who are usually responsible for dragging contaminated water for miles from remote wells to their home villages. There is no time for them to go to school. The donations are used to drill wells and build sanitary facilities in schools and communities.” NEVEN SUBOTIC STIFTUNG ACCESS TO SAFE, CLEAN WATER = BETTER LIFE www.720dgree.de The goal of the Neven Subotic Foundation can be well summarized by the motto, “Together, let’s give the children hope”. The Foundation’s mission is to give every child in the world a fair and a real chance to lead a self-determined life. Because the plights of the world are in many ways especially impactful for children, after careful consideration and research, we decided to get to work. By being provided with such basic things as the free access to clean water, children get not only the opportunity for personal hygiene but to attend the school with no health risks or interupptions. And this is one of the essential prerequisites for people to have a chance to further improve their personal living conditions themselves. The Foundation’s project 100% WASH (Water, Sanitation, Hygiene) gives children access to these vital essentials. NEVEN SUBOTIC STIFTUNG 100% DONTATIONS GO DIRECTLY INTO THE PROJECTS Having successfully established a network of trusted partners and organizations wellversed both in the subject matter and the local conditions, the impact of the engagement has been fully realized. To date, the foundation has enabled more than 50,000 people to gain access to clean and safe drinking water and decent sanitary conditions through its projects. The foundation documents the completion and sustainable success of the foundation projects with personal reports, pictures, videos and the GPS location (geolocation).
